DIY Candle using simple kitchen ingredients : Rock Salt and Cooking Oil

in #craft7 years ago (edited)

Halloween, All Saints Day, and All Souls Day wouldn't be complete without lighting those candles. What would you do if you run out of those?

I remember doing this as a candle alternative way back in high school.

Today, I will show you three simple steps on how to create a homemade candle using readily-available kitchen ingredients.

Materials

Cooking oil, Rock Salt, Clear glass, Match stick, Cotton

Step 1

Put at least three spoons of rock salt (iodized salt) in the glass. This will serve as the base of our candle.

Step 2

Pour the cooking oil on top of the salt

Stop until cooking oil is as half as the salt's amount

Step 3

Coat the match stick using a thin layer of cotton. This will serve as the wick of our homemade candle

Dip the wick into a cooking oil and put it at the center of our homemade candle

Now, we're all set! Let's light it up!!!

After two straight hours of lighting it up, my homemade candle barely consumed the cooking oil.

Based on my experience, this could illuminate for about 15 straight hours, depending on the cooking oil's amount.

Because of its natural ingredients, this homemade candle creates neither black smoke nor smokey smell.

  • Fret not, once the homemade candle runs out of cooking oil, the salt which serves as the base will immediately prevent the candle from burning up.
  • You can always refill another cooking oil and make another wick (cotton-coated match stick) for further usage.

I hope you learned something from this simple and effective way of saving yourself from unexpected blackouts and costly candles

Caution: Keep out of children!
