Some more details on @commentrewarder for smaller and new accounts

in #crlast month

Hey everyone! After a successful launch of the @commentrewarder project and seeing a lot of activity surrounding it, I wanted to get a post out real quick explaining what one of its best usecases is and why it makes life easier for smaller accounts.

I actually had to do a little research to back up what I thought I knew about the blockchain when it came to the minimum author reward threshold. A dev by the username abw helped with making sure I got the facts straight so thank you.

Basically I knew about the minimum threshold being somewhere at .02 hbd but I wasn't sure if this mainly only affected posts and comments that did 50/50 hbd/hp or if it also affected posts and comments doing 100% power up. I kind of tested this and it showed that rewards under this threshold would not generate post rewards no matter if 50/50 or 100% power up.

Why does this threshold exist? I believe it was initially put into effect to avoid spam and reward abuse. For the longest time the "company" that used to run this chain and development would offer free accounts to new users with some stake along with it. This opened up abuse as farmers/squatters would attempt to get say 1000 accounts all with 10 HP for free which meant 10000 HP votes, and in order to not be detected they could attempt to spread the votes thin over many comments. This is why the threshold was put in place but as we know now it hurts the lower stake authors but maybe also incentivizes to power up some hive? Either way. The other thing it helps with is also less calculation bloat on the blockchain itself as it can ignore a lot of these rewards that don't hit the threshold.

So what does this mean?

Basically any vote that doesn't give posts/comments at least .02 HBD in rewards in total will return nothing to the author or curator.

This is a value that depends both on the price of hive, your voting mana and your total active HP. If hive price is low (like now), you need more total HP to reach this with a 100% vote at 100% voting mana.

Okay so a lot of accounts, especially newer ones are affected by this, it also doesn't help if you delegate all of your HP away to other projects for various things which is a reason we at OCD often tell people not to delegate to us but use your voting power to build connections and give out rewards to your engagements in your posts.

If you're a smaller account that can't get comments above the .02 hbd threshold, it's pointless to give out 100% votes which burns your voting mana. This is something I see many doing.

Instead you can spend that voting power voting posts or comments that have already surpassed the threshold as you can still get .001 hp curation rewards but no curation rewards either if the post/comment doesn't get past the threshold.

So how does commentrewarder help there?

Depending on the amount of comments you receive on your post that you want CR to tip, you can give tiny votes while leaving room to adjust who gets more. For instance instead of voting the comments with 50-100% votes, which still get the comment no post rewards nor any curation rewards for yourself but burns 1-2% voting mana (if you are at 100% mana when u start voting). Instead you can vote the comments with 1-2% votes, burning an insignificant amount of mana but splitting up the comemntrewarder tips between 0.5x and 1x.

This leaves you with extra voting power to use that day to cast on posts of others or comments already past the threshold which helps avoid a lot of returns going up in flames and allows you to grow your account slightly faster.

I realize this may all be a bit complicated, especially to newcomers who may not even know how voting mana works exactly, maybe I can post about that another time. Do let me know if you understood it somewhat. :D

OK ... I've been using @commentrewarder on different levels on different posts, so I think I get it ... the service takes what we put forth as beneficiary and just divvies it up in liquid Hive between commenters who comment in the first three days instead of us having to worry about the dreaded "dust vote that pays dust to everyone.

Yes! Although some times it's hbd+hive if your post is 50/50 and not 100% powered up.

OK ... thanks for that info so I will know what different things to look for if I get a question ... I'm sure my regular commenters are going to be pleasantly surprised!

So true.

I have to be honest, this is the part of the chain that I failed to fully grasp. It's not so easy to relate to Comment Rewarder, even though your explanation really makes sense.

Still, I think it's a good explanation to give to people who are curious about the logical use case of CR.

So, hive-now.com/upvotecalc tells me that a 0.02 HBD upvote requires a 100% with 2500 HP.
This means that what you refer to as small accounts counts as less HP staked than that amount right? I'm only halfway there 😅.

That sounds about right, yeah! Thanks for checking

Okay so a lot of accounts, especially newer ones are affected by this

That's true Sir.

But dont u think that the long-term and permanent solution is to make an amendment in the blockchain code to abolish such barriers....and make it equitable for all.

The justification behind 0.02 threshold was comment farming...but even with 0.02 threshold that can still happen.

And more than that those who have lesser HP like 500-1000 HP...they will be forced to(because of 0.02 threshold their vote vales will be less than 0.02) delegate. The idea of curation is not to delegate but to curate by as many individuals as possible....and as we are entering into microblogging realm it will be unjust to keep a threshold of 0.02. I am sure the witness might reconsider this point if intellectuals like you and others persuade them to do so.

Thanks.
🙏🙏🙏

This for instance is what I'm talking about in the post, while I appreciate you voted the comment with a 100% vote, it won't get me any author rewards and it won't get you any curation rewards. You now burned ~2% voting mana (depending on how much you had when you cast it) for nothing, instead you could've voted 1% as acknowledgement that you read the comment and if this was your post you would've told @commentrewarder who to tip part of your post rewards to. Then you could've used the other 99% of that vote on a post that will give author rewards and you could've gotten 0.001-0.002 HP curation rewards back after a week. (Although I'm still not 100% sure on the latter)

That's what the service helps with.

Okay....but it's too much of cognition while curating. However, I appreciate this service.

They can still curate posts that are past the .02 threshold already or they believe will get there by other voters to get returns on their smaller votes. It's only if you vote for instance comments where you end up being the only voter.

oh cool, I didn't even know you could split up commentrewarder rewards by the % you vote with and it's good idea to not use high % if my vote doesn't give over the treshold.

Thanks I got quite a bit smarter now!

I like the idea very much. I'm not sure if I understand the voting comments issue to 100% but I see the imbalance that makes it much harder for smaller accounts.

It is very difficult to understand, could you make a more detailed publication to better understand, especially the percentages. Thank you.

I could try yeah.

What I would like to know is if the rewards for comments are made from my post? That is to say, from what I get in my post, part of it is for @comm to distribute to the comments that I selected? What service does @commentrewarder offer (I suppose that it makes the rewards be given to the comments selected by me or is there another service that I am overlooking??)

This is actually really helpful to know! I was wondering what those comment rewarder rewards that just showed up on my feed today :) So now I can vote big for posts I really like with 100% that have at least 0.02 HBD regardless of my low max vote and can vote 1% on things that don't yet have 0.02 HBD payout yet.

I find it very interesting how to manage our voting percentage in order to get the most out of our interaction on the platform and support projects like CR. Another interesting detail is regarding the idea of empowering our account instead of delegating HP. I think I'm doing things backwards, my friend! 😆 But thank you for this information which is very helpful to me for a lot of guidance.

I guess that means I should stop upvoting comments immi because 0.2 HBD are ~ 1 Hive? Whoa, my 100 % vote is currently between 4 and 5 cent - LOL - I've been doing a whole lot of dusting. Right, off to set my comment vote to 10% and I'll try the comment rewarder thingie with my next post. Thank you.

Wow, this is good, so basically we get to spilt the comment reward by percent, very fair to everyone. If my voting manna is full, I think it gets to 0.3 but I'll try to stake up more Hive power so that my impact can be felt on the people's post, I just love to support good content either ways.

I did ..

I didn't know that for smaller accounts the curation gotten from voting was 0 initially.

I knew it was small but I didn't know it was actually nill...😂

Seems many misunderstood that part from the post or I just sucked at explaining, you can earn .001 hp curation rewards but those need to come from posts/comments that make it past the dust threshold. So if you're a small voter among a few other voters on a post/comment then you will still get the tiny rewards (I think).

Ohhhh

Now I get it...

I just had another question a few hours after my post.

What if someone comments on one of the posts that I've put commentrewarder as the beneficiary for but the post payout has already reached.
If I vote on the comment, would the commenter still get a tip?

Nah it actually stops including them after 3 days of post age so it's even before the post pays out and tips go out.

Ohhh

That's tough 😂

@acidyo, I paid out 13.286 HIVE and 0.000 HBD to reward 30 comments in this discussion thread.

I did understand something, tho I am not a newcomer xD. especially, this part,

it's pointless to give out 100% votes which burns your voting mana. This is something I see many doing.

actually was a nice new point of view to me. its a different logic, and frankly speaking, I was among those who considered when your HP is tiny 100% vote is correct way to go; now I can see better why it isnt so, and I adjusted my opinion, thank you.

I mean, voting on a post which already is past the dust threshold with 100% is okay, my example meant small accounts voting comments 100% (maybe you meant that as well), then it's quite a waste.

then it's quite a waste.

on one hand yes, on other hand no. let me make an accent that upvote may be not only a question of money, but also a statement. when one vote at 100% it means... something, a 1st grade support, figuratively speaking. when upvote just 10% and HP is tiny, all in all it means (at least for me) that its not about rewards/money at all. ☘️

sure yeah, but for newbies to know that it may hinder their APR is important, more important that they can grow their account even 10x 0.001 hp rewards per day than someone who's been here a long time and should know better to judge a newcomers 1% comment vote

yes. the knowledge is useful, > I educated myself and learned from the post.

thing is the more i think about all this the more questions arise if everything I'm saying is true, lol, tough life not being a dev but trying to understand how the code works on top of constant changes over the years. So discussions like this really drive things forward.

I realize this may all be a bit complicated, especially to newcomers who may not even know how voting mana works exactly, maybe I can post about that another time.

After about 7 years here I guess I am still a newcomer- I vote posts and comments with 40 percent vote. Now when I think about it it makes sense to vote comments with lesser percent. Especially now when commentrewarder exists.

True.

Now you may already use that voting mana that you saved in upvoting other users' post to support them.

Yes it seems smarter to have a bit more voting power for posts.

Very interesting, Hive needs new creations and new ways to encourage engagement and interaction among its members through comments.

I'm not new and this is still at least a little confusing to me but maybe if I give it a bit more time I'll understand. I've already received rewards but I get so few comments I don't need to use comment rewarder just yet.

i'm new so i had to read twice to understand, a smart idea, thanks for explaining, 1 question: does @commentrewarder recognize only 1-2% votes ? does 1% = 0.02 hbd ?

the service does count the small votes but the rewards depend on how much of your post rewards it gets

I learned of the post minimum requirement a few months after starting Hive, the comments, a few months after that. Once I was able to reach 0.02 per max upvote I was voting those who comment on my posts with 100 percent. I think the commentrewarder would have been very helpful for me back then.

I will be more cautious in making my positive assessments. Thank you for keeping us informed. I like this community. Success

Didn't know that even the upvotes were being farmed in an organized manner. No wonder some hive whales 0are downvoting some accounts and activities.

Thank you for this. It's good CR is already working. Hope to try it soon.

I always thought the threshold was 0.02 HIVE but it's actually 0.02 HBD which means I've been upvoting comments with dust, oh my😊

I thought that 3% was fixed for commentrewarder but it can be changed and it is good that we have the flexibility to set the beneficiary %

Yeah 3% is minimum to enable to icon on @peakd and for the bot to work I believe, it may probably return the beneficiary rewards if placed under 3%.

There's an icon on Peakd? Cool, I didn't noticed it! Hope the other major front-ends add it too.

EDIT: I guess is this one below! :)

That's a very interesting point. I might need to bump up my votes that I have been giving out on comments lately. I've likely been just wasting mana.

But I like voting on posts even though my upvote value is just 0.001-0.005.
Thank you for the reward. I used it in my HPUD. 😁

Yes you can still do that, it's just that if you are the only voter and the post ends up having less than .02 hbd rewards at payout that neither the author nor the voter gets any returns.

Oh.. thank you for explaining it further. 😊😊 I think it's fine.😁😁 As long as the author felt that there's someone in the community supporting him/her.😊

I realize this may all be a bit complicated, especially to newcomers who may not even know how voting mana works exactly

I believe, everyone sees that slider now unlike older days where one can see only after having 500 HP ? If they can see the slider, then it will be easy to understand.

The slider indicates the value of the vote and it works for users who has higher HP.

In the case of users who has less than 500HP it may appear as 0 or low decimal figures. The trouble is that users may not even know whether they will get any rewards. The threshold is not accurately explained in any frontends.

In the case of users who has less than 500HP it may appear as 0 or low decimal figures

That's not nice then, ideally it should show figures up to two decimal places at least ?

Yes and maybe put an “explainer” about the reward threshold in order for a voter to increase the percentage or increase their HP to reach above the threshold 😅

Ya, that's a teaser idea 👈

😊👍

@sanjeevm! @curamax Totally agrees with your content! so I just sent 1 IDD to your account on behalf of @curamax.

Indeed Logo

Sure, but not many may be aware of how much mana a full vote burns based on current voting mana, etc, dunno if the slider itself makes much clear.

Ya, anyway its complex for sure for newbies.

Es algo complicado tendré que leer varias veces para familiarizarme

Hey @acidyo, as you know I am using @commentrewarder for all my posts now to help reward commenters. Yes, it makes total sense to use as little mana as possible when using @commentrewarder and it comes to voting on your own post comments because either way the tip is going to be spread across comments I have voted on anyway. But my question to you is if I give one comment a 2% vote and another comment a 1% vote when it comes to @commentrewarder distributing the tips will it know to give more to the 2% comment and half less to the other comment that has been voted at 1%?

Furthermore, just to commend you further with what I think is a really useful service I asked @hivetrending whether you guys take a cut of the beneficiary part of the payout before you distribute the tips, I was very pleased to receive the answer you take nothing. That's amazing.

But my question to you is if I give one comment a 2% vote and another comment a 1% vote when it comes to @commentrewarder distributing the tips will it know to give more to the 2% comment and half less to the other comment that has been voted at 1%?

Yes, that's the plan at least how it should work, let us know if it seems to turn out otherwise. :D

Appreciate it! I'm already thinking of a new project to support photographers on Hive and have received some good feedback so far. Might post about it tomorrow!

That's great thanks for clarifying. I am keen to know more about your photography idea, as you can see from my blog photography is a very important art for me.

Congratulations @acidyo! You have completed the following achievement on the Hive blockchain And have been rewarded with New badge(s)

You received more than 412000 HP as payout for your posts, comments and curation.
Your next payout target is 414000 HP.
The unit is Hive Power equivalent because post and comment rewards can be split into HP and HBD

You can view your badges on your board and compare yourself to others in the Ranking

It is complicated for those of us who have also been sharing here for a while but it is worth noting that #commentrewarder is an incredible project which, when we know how to understand it, we will be able to obtain the greatest possible benefit

@commertrewarder it's a awesome project so that with your help we can enhance our small accounts

I continue to like the idea if we can award smaller accounts it's incentive for them to keep building and buy a stake.

Its time to test this on next post, o maybe care more about how get comments. To be honest is not common for me recibe a comment. Cheers sir.

Hi, I would like you to explain at some point when you have time the vote for mana. Thanks
