As welcome as the news of the conviction and investigation of former presidents is, it is important to remember that South Korean chaebols still get away with gaming the system. This month the "Nut Rage" Korean Air heiress was returned to the company's board and in February, Lee Jae-yong, vice-chairman of Samsung, was released from prison early. Such decisions leave South Koreans exasperated and must change so that the rule of law can be seen to be applied consistently and fairly. As long as chaebols can keep getting away with it, they could serve as the source of cronyism and corruption in South Korea.
