Super food of the week! TURMERIC

Turmeric is a spice that comes from the turmeric plant. It is commonly known as the main spice in curry and used very often in Asian food. The root of the turmeric plant is also used to make medicine. In an article taken from mindbodygreen.com registered dietician and health coach Jessica Cording talks about the health benefits of Turmeric. Here are 8 benefits she discusses:

WHY USE TURMERIC? Turmeric contains a chemical called curcumin. This is the main active ingredient in turmeric meaning; this is the chemical that works to fight diseases when put into the body. Combined with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties, it seems to be a one shot cure making turmeric a disease-fighting powerhouse. Golden milk This is an infusion of dry turmeric powder, or fresh turmeric root, blended with dairy or non-dairy milk. Golden milk is said to have many benefits for our body. From helping build our immune system, a remedy for the common cough and cold or even an aid to our digestive system, golden milk is an immune boosting yummy treat!

2 cups of dairy or non dairy milk.
1 table spoon of turmeric.
Pinch of black pepper.
Pinch of cinnamon.
1 tea spoon of honey.

Disease, bloating, diabetes and so much more. Turmeric is a great ingredient to be added to your daily routine.
One negative On the down side, curcumin is poorly absorbed in the blood stream and by weight only amounts for 3% of its overall content. Therefore, to experience the full effects a turmeric extract with higher levels of curcumin may prove more effective.

4 table spoons of turmeric powder.
1 table spoons of yoghurt.
4 tablespoons of raw honey.

Mix all ingredients together in a small bowl and apply to inflamed area immediately.

Not only is turmeric an antioxidant on its own, but turmeric is also known to boost the activity of the antioxidant enzymes in the body!
