I will be running #spotthefake every Tuesday, and I will post a few pics of a few antiques. It may be antique lighting, antique furniture, or even top designer furniture. One or more will be fake or reproduction.

Almost all the entries had the correct answer, but unfortunately, some entrants did not resteem, so they did not qualify for the Random Thing Picker draw. Don't forget to RESTEEM
The first pic was the fake. We buy both the reproductions and proper vintage lights in India, from the same supplier. So this supplier is able to make exact copies of the vintage lights at his factory, and his copies are PHENOMENAL. A lot of people commented on the shininess of the light in Image One, but don't forget that aluminium (or any metal for that matter) can be polished up to a high shine!
Quite a few peeps noted that the second image looked "fake" because it was so perfect. This is a good observation. A lot of the time, repro pieces are sooo good that you cannot tell the difference. Sometimes I can't tell, after doing this for almost five years. It takes a very sharp, trained eye to Spot The Fake!! (I couldn't help that lol!!)
πΈ SPOT THE FAKE #05 - ANTIQUE FRENCH SOFA πΈ πΈ
This week, I am testing your newly trained eye! Both of these sofas have new fabric on, but only one is a proper antique sofa. Often, we will buy a piece of furniture with completely ripped and/or soiled fabric, and the piece will have to be reupholstered. In these cases it's important to note details like what wood the frame is made from, whether that wood is carved, polished or painted, and in person, you can often feel the stuffing of the cushions to try to determine age.

This is a tough one, if I could see it in person. I actually feel like the second is the fake as it looks like the popular reproductions made from the 30s-50s but maybe that is the metal studding. Hmmm. This is fun though! What a fun challenge.

My guess is that the first one is fake because it seems they used staples rather than the tacks used in the 2nd image.

Thank-you. I know they were both re-upholstered, however, I would think they would attempt to keep it as original as possible and use tacks where tacks were used before. I guess I'll just need to wait and see what the final answer is.

I think, picture 2 is the fake one. Because the wood looks newly curved, old furniture has the better quality and smoothness, i don't know maybe. Haha! But I still go for image 2 π

I am so glad to have answered correctly the last time; makes me feel like I won it hahaha. This time, I think the second one is fake. As much as I like the second and don't like the first one because of its shimmery fabric, I think the finishing off the wooden structure of the second couch isn't too fine and doesn't match the French style of the couch.

My guess is that the First one is the fake. :)
The wood seems to be polished better then the second one.
Somehow to me, second Sofa seems older as the Joints of the is not hidden by polishing the wood.
But there is also the fact that there is a price tag on the second one. I marked it with blue color. So, it could be second one which is the fake.
But I will stay with the first one.
Hehehe! Quite the analytical answer there! I will tell you a secret about the joints next week !

The 2nd sofa has a very detailed works,both the frame and the cushion works.The 1st one looks like a hurry burry replica in my opinion.

I'd say number 2 is fake, the wood looks a bit too piney and light; maybe that's the lighting though. Number one looks older and the colour of the wood is more what I imagine on a sofa of that kind.

I think number 1 is fake. It looks too symmetrical, and machine-made. 2 has a few imperfections, and those old-style pins holding the upholstery in place. No I'll look really stoooopid if 2 is the fake lol!!
