Thanks for the answers and responses to the "Rituals" SVI Giveaway from last week... it was interesting to know that I'm not the most crazy one in the room!
Anyway, this week, I have a much more idle question... one born from wandering around small villages in France this week past. In these villages, it can be hard to see what is around the corner, as the buildings are usually built right up to the street edge, and so many of these corners are impossible to see around... or you are in the middle of some field somewhere, with no idea where a particular fork in the path will take you.
Now, I know that some of the mystery can be removed with the help of Google Maps or an equivalent... but sometimes it is just nice to pick a direction and go... but which direction?
My Question
- When you come to a fork in the road/path... which way do you normally go? Left or Right? Do you have any idea why?
My sample answer
I have no idea why... but I'm drawn to taking the right handed path! There is something that just compels me to go in that direction, probably force of habit and training and life experience... all of these things that contribute to what we would otherwise call intuition.
Most of the time, we are taught that things progress from left to right (in a Western education)... in writing, the flow of time (although that could also be up and down from my later training...) or the order of numbers in a number line. We are essentially trained to think of the flow of things from left towards the right...
I think that is why I am drawn to taking the right hand path?
Rules
- Upvote is not required, but appreciated!
- Resteem is NOT necessary!
- In the comments, answer as best as you can the questions that are posed in the "My Questions"!
- I have added a small Steem-Bounty to the post, so that everyone who replies with a valid entry will get something back. If I give your post a small upvote, it is valid (also, subscribe to @dustsweeper for maximum benefit!).
- I will be sponsoring as many people as this post pays out in liquid SBD/STEEM. Also I will kick in at least the required amount to round up to the full number. Winner is by random generator after a shortlisting of quality comments!
- PLEASE PLEASE Don’t upvote your OWN comment. I can’t stop you doing it, but it seems to mess up the distribution of the Bounty for everyone else. If you upvote your own comment, I will consider it an invalid entry when doing the draw.
Steem Basic Income
One of the first communities that I came in contact with at the beginning of my time at Steemit was @steembasicincome. As a author starting out on your fresh new Steemit account, Steemit can be a daunting and lonely place to be. OFten, it can feel like you are posting into an abyss with no one listening and with no ability to grow out of the situation. A share of Steem Basic Income gives you a guaranteed vote on one post a day, thus giving you a small but over time cumulative support to your account to help grow you out of your initial wilderness!
With this post, I want to help sponsor people who might not even have the spare 1 STEEM that is required for registration. So, when this post pays out, I will sponsor people depending on the payout of this post. Basically, I will round up the SBD payout from this post and then that will be the number of people I will sponsor. (So, if the payout is 2.3 SBD, I will sponsor 3 people). OF course, this is not simply an altruistic move, as the sponsor of a Steem Basic Income share also gets a share, so it is a great way to help others whilst helping yourself!
Last week's winners
The last post paid out 0.656 SBD and 0 STEEM in liquid earnings. So, that would make 2 shares.
The winners by random draw are:

Interesting question for me I firstly try to think logical if this isn't possible then I normally go with my gut feeling id say it's rare I would just pick left or right just because...I do know people often pick right because it's in the word as right must be the right way.
Ah... I think you put a touch more thought into a path selection than I do! I just wander unless I need to be somewhere!

Take the steeper path 😊
LOL... for security or just for a touch of extra work?

I tend to go to the right when approaching a road to a Y direction. I just apply the verse referring to the goat and the sheep. Thanks for considering my input to your question.
Huh?! I don't know about this goat and sheep!
It’s from Matthew chapter 35, verses 31-46. The sheep they were chosen because they feed the hungry, cloth the naked, and visited those who were alone or isolated ... something like that ...

I am a man so I am supposed to go to the left because women are always right 😂

I tend to go right.
If both paths have the same amount of uncertainty I will go right. It is something I can't explain, it is an instict reaction.
Me too... are you right handed by any chance?
Yup, right handed.

It depends on my intuition. If my gut says to go right, I go left and the other way around.
I know it sounds silly, but it works most of the time.
It's weird, because my gut feeling is right most of the time, except when it comes to which way to go. I can count on the fact that it's wrong 99% of the time.
LOL... so you do the contrary to your intuition? That is already against the grain of what most people seem to want to do!
Lol, yep.
But only when it comes to directions.
I would never go against my intuition in other situations; it's a well-developed tool I often use. But with directions...idk. i can completely trust in the fact that my intuition is always wrong :0)

When I come to a fork in the road I usually go right because I'm usually already on the right side of the path. I only go left if I get this feeling in my gut that I should. Also, if I backtrack because I wanted to go the other way instead it works out because then I make another right turn. I like right turns.
Ah... so you walk on the right side of the path already... so it is the closer side!
I follow the rules of the road even off the road because it just makes sense

Well ! It depends on where Iam where I want to go. I don't want to wander too much off so I will allways go in a cirle so left it is when a village or some centre, like with a festival. To the south of me and the other way round when it is north of me. But mostly left.

Interesting! Are you left handed by any chance?
No right handed.

I think this question brings up a larger question, do you really have any free will at all? one could argue that your choice has already been made at the beginning of time, based on the direction and speed of particles colliding and that we all are derived from processes, like dominoes falling from before us. When the first Adam's split in beginning of time, their cascading interactions led to this moment and the choice of you going left or right.
But to look at another way. I help teach people some tumbling. The process of learning which is your dominant leg to leap off of for a cartwheel lets say... goes something like this. Close your eyes, then have someone give you a small push from behind. whatever leg you step with first, is your dominant leg. This being said, my dominant leg is my right so I probably take a right step first and go down the right path. :/ ... That is my thoughts.. Lol.
Nice one! A bonus SBI share for you at payout... I was thinking a bit about free will as well... in some ways it would be disconcerting to not have free will, as that really goes against the grain of what we think being human really is! However, in the old physics (Classical...)... free will was really an anomaly. Now, it is less clear... although, with branching "universes"... it could still be that free will is an illusion!
I thought that the dominance thing might also have something to do with it (or habit... like how people on right hand driving countries tend to dodge to the right when walking towards someone...)... I hadn't thought able foot/leg dominance! I only knew of dominance from when I did archery, and ti was the eye that you chose to aim with!

Most likely right. I'm right handed and since I'm hoping to make the right turn, I will probably turn to the right.

Yes... I think the handedness tends to have a great deal to do with which side we would chose!
Definitely

I always go to the right. I think its because my right leg is just slightly shorter then my left...
Hahaha ;)

@bengy, It depends as per situation because when we don't know which turn will take us where then sometimes it's better to listen the Inner Voice.
Posted using Partiko Android
Ah... but does your inner voice have a preference?
No because Left Turn can take us towards Right Destination and vice versa.
Have a wonderful time ahead.

I would also choose right.
I think it also has to do with our traffic system. In most countries we are supposed to drive on the right side of the road.
I think that habit really does play a great deal into our choice... however, I come from a left handed driving country...

I've never thought about it but I'd rather walk by on the left side, not excluded by a mistake.
Got any ideas why you thing that would be?
