A Lasting Closet— choices in footwear.
In 2014 I bought patent leather Mila loafers from Topshop. These babies have traveled across the country with me, have been my everyday go-tos to class back in college and have made a few appearances post-college as well. I've worn and loved them so much that there is a hole straight through the ball of the foot on both shoes. A testament to my love for this style shoe, and their versatility seen in old outfit photos below. I couldn't bear to throw them out until I found an equal worthy replacement.
The Everlane Modern Loafer, my first purchases from Everlane. The breaking in process was very similar to my Brixton boots, which I will post the review on here soon! These are my every day, wear with anything loafers. At this point, I need to get the sole repaired, and see if there's anything we can do about that BS toe dimple happening at the tips of the toes. It happened shortly after I bought them and have been my least favorite thing about these shoes. If you guys have any tips on fixing or avoiding that—please let me know!
Now, the new new. I was shopping at Crossroads one weekend and ran across a pair of Everlane Modern Oxfords. (Far right in the image above). Very excited for this find, especially because I got them for $37.50 and they retail for $168. Also, I am a size 8/8.5 shoe, in Everlane I size up to a 9, but in my experience with the Brixton boot and Modern loafer I think I should go up another half size. So, finding these at a size 9.5 was perfect.
I can finally bid farewell to my Topshop oxfords and replace the Everlane Modern Oxfords.
This has made me want to take stock of a bunch of other things in my closet. Sneakers, tees, jeans, button downs... Might be a good addition to make sure I'm getting rid of old or unworn things, as I invest in the new definitely-will-wear-every-day things.
A look at some of my favorite outfits with the Topshop Mila Oxford for a proper farewell...
Thanks for reading! Would love to hear what your go-to shoes are in your closet!
Gorgeous style and photos! I'm wearing my black suede loafers right now and they are my go-to if I'm not wearing boots. My style is either: loafers, Blundstone boots, my knee-high falling-apart Merells or athletic shoes. I used to wear Oxfords all the time but I developed some interesting feet issues that made them too painful for daily wear!
As a minimalist, shoes are tough for me. I'm a firm believer than an outfit is made by the shoes, but having a small number of shoes makes that rather difficult. I'd love to learn more about different shoe styles and expand my range, even if that means cycling some styles out to implement new options!
Agreed! I’ve been working in fashion public relations/marketing realm now for a minute and I confess I’ve never terribly well dressed in comparison to my more fashionable colleagues! But to me shoes and accessories are always what make the outfit. Especially a bad*** pair of boots or interesting not so typical jewelry.
I definitely get away with wearing pretty much the same shoes everyday because they go with everything, are classic and can make my less than exciting outfits more professional.
Thank you!! Shoes are definitely tough, but I feel like once you find that one style that really works for you, It makes life so much easier! I've found that this style of shoe works for me for both work in a corporate environment, and more casual weekend style too.
