Compost piles can be made in many different ways, from slow to fast, layered, mixed, with limited specific ingredients or with nearly anything under the sun tossed in.
However you do it, at some point you want to actually USE it. More specifically you want the bits and pieces that have actually composted fully, not the larger chunks that still need more time.
This becomes even more important if you need compost for potted plants, raised beds, or other similar applications.
This is how we made ours, and it works like a champ.
I know you see it hanging from a swing set in the video but since that video was filmed we've also unhooked the sifter and placed it on top of a wheelbarrow and sifted directly into that, which works GREAT for small batches.
Taking the swing set out of the equation, since it is only a convenience and not required, you will need:
- (2) 1" x 4" x 6' Boards
- (1) 2" x 2" x 42" Baluster
- (1) 1/4" x 1/4" x 24" Wide Hardware Cloth
- Wood Screws
- Staples
Watch the video to see just how easy it is to put it all together!
Stop buying compost from the store that came from who-knows-where and has been sitting around for who-know-how-long where rain has been leaching out nutrients and contaminants have been getting in, and start making your own FRESH compost!
What will you use it for first at your homestead?
You going to finally be uploading here?
This is my 3rd post here. Just have to get it into the routine.
Yes! My buddy Jared showing how it's done on Steemit! Go get 'em Tiger!
Have to spread those wings if you want to fly, or so I'm told.
Just shared it to get you seen...
Thanks!
That's nice. I like the convenience added with the swing. I imagine that makes it a whole lot easier.
Thanks! It really does help out a lot and if you have a good bit of compost to process it gives you a lot of room to work in.
Great article! I would like to include this post in the next issue of the Weekly Homesteading Newsletter which is a series posted every Sunday that aims to help collect awesome articles and resources like this one! This article will be linked and your username featured if you accept - please let me know if it is alright to include your article as soon as possible! Thank you and have a great day!
Sure, that would be just fine. If it all possible it would mean a lot if you can include a link to, or embed, my video :-) Thanks!
