What's Wrong With You, Steemit.com? An Open Letter To My Internet Love

in #community7 years ago (edited)
The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place. - George Bernard Shaw

Nicely said, George.

Communication is key in any good working relationship - both in business and on the private terrain.

So let's talk, steemit!

This picture was provided by pixabay.com

What's wrong with you, steemit.com?

You know I'm one of your biggest supporters.

If you heard me talking about you on the streets, you'd be very flattered. I'm not short in praise when it comes to promote you.

I spend more time with you than with my family.

Everybody in this community knows that I love being enthusiastic and passionate about this place, but lately it's getting quite tough to stay patient and positive.

It's almost impossible to write anything on this blockchain using the steemit interface.

Comments don't get through, you post them again, then the older ones appear and you have to delete the previous one, then both disappear again. It's a serious mess!

And PLEASE don't tell me to go to busy.org, because that doesn't solve the problem. I don't want to go somewhere else.

Also: do you really want me to leave?

Are the readers of The Observer, Wired and other famous tech magazines that covered steemit lately also redirected to busy.org?

Look, now you see what I mean. These downtimes really hurt.

  1. Wired (4th of Oct 2017): The social network doling out millions in ephemeral money
  2. The Observer (3rd of Oct 2017): Another Cryptocurrency Venture Aims to Fix Media’s Monetization Problem

These articles link to steemit.com and not to busy.org.

In the end that might lead to a serious reputation problem. And we're all sitting in the same boat, you know.

Now you can tell me that the blockchain is working perfectly, but c'mon: regular people don't seperate between Steem and Steemit like we - the heavy users - do. They don't even know the difference.

If you wanna impress new potential investors, then having a laggy website is surely not the best selling argument.

So enough complaining, honey! How can we help you to recover? I'm getting dizzy watching this 'loading' circle on my screen. Really.

You want me to be passionate about you? Then don't ignore me.

You can't ask me to give 120%, to be fully committed, to spend day and night with you only when things are alright. I'm all in - in good and bad times.

So if you want this community to advocate you, then involve us!

Big hugs and get well soon,

Marly -

PS: By the way this is my 4th (!) attempt to publish this article... I would have tried it a million times, some things have to be said :-)

This post is voice of every steemian. It should be fixed now. Thank you @surfermarly

Thank YOU for stopping by :-)

I consider the Steemit dev team, the investors, the contributors, the witnesses and the end-users ALL Steemians, who hope that this platform will soon become mainstream, with a super responsive interface, with a blockchain based currency that is worth much more than it is now and simply a wonderful experience for everyone participating.

I'm not sure that with this definition every Steemian agrees about the message of this post. But I am sure we all understand @surfermarly's take on this and we sure do symphatize with the points she makes.

I don't think that we neccesarily need to have always the very same perspective / point of view. It's actually the difference of opinions that makes a community dynamic. I think in the end we want the very same (this place succeeding), even though we might have different ideas about the way to get there.

I may or may not have upvoted this. I clicked the upvote arrow. I will attempt to comment.

I just wanted to say, you took the words right out of my mouth. I couldn't agree more. I love SteemIt not busy.com both from an investment pov and an end-user. crossing my fingers and pushing post, hoping for the best.

Don't worry about the upvote. I appreciate your support anyways!
I hope my reply finds you well :-)
Regarding the article I didn't want it to be very negative, but I really think it's time to talk seriously.
Crossing my fingers, too!

Same here. Just tried to upvote your comment-no love. I left a reply as well. Thanks for this post! ✌🏾

I'm pretty sure the latest issues are related to the new jussi proxy STEEMIT implemented, which seems to work now via HTTP POST requests versus a websocket connection. Site performance has been abysmal since they launched it. :(

"Dear steemit community! We're currently installing a new jussi proxy. That may lead to downtimes. We apologize for the inconvenciences this may cause. We will keep you posted."
Something like that? Took me 30 seconds :-)

except this was supposed to be the "big fix" for the site, not sure they want to "advertise" that it may not be quite the solution they've be "hoping" for ...

They just lack any professionalism. Look at the person handling their twitter. They get butthurt and troll anybody who tries to complain. Can you imagine in Facebook's troubleshooting was like that?

The site is dying, friends. The interest in it by the makers waned long ago and its life is being miserably extended by the hard work of witnesses, like pain medication for a terminal cancer patient.

Hmmm I don't think that the site is dying. Technical issues can be faced at any time. I think it could be handled in a different way. A solid communication in times of trouble is worth a lot. It rebuilds trust very quickly.

I feel you. It is really starting to get super annoying. I am currently on steemitstage, but also doesn't work reliable (though more reliable than steemit.com).

You can really feel this issue growing in the community - less people are active since these issues make the UX horrible.

I just pray for it to be over soon. In the meantime, let's just suffer together.

Haha, yeah let's suffer together - nicely said Shannon! :-)
The issue is only growing due to the lack of communication.

I have just had almost exactly the same conversation with somebody who just accused me of being negative. It's not about negativity it's about reality.

As you implied, the worst advert for Steemit, is to have all the extra users driven to us by positive press, to be scared away by a laggy website.

Busy.org is not a solution, I am on it now, and I don't see my feed or my conversations. Steemit is what needs sorting out, it has been weeks now.

It is beginning to feel like we have been abandoned, if they can't be bothered anymore, they should hand it to people who can be.

Perhaps it is because they have no true competition, maybe if and when that happens, ideas will be bucked up.

Cg

I don't think that asking for transparency is negative at all.
People who believe that this is a negative behaviour don't have any idea about business. There is no progress without controversial discussions, different points of view and points of friction.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts with us!

Yeah... I fully agree with your post!

Thank you @lemouth! I appreciate your support :-)

This is very good text :) I was think same.. but you did this text more even better.
Yes, I would also like this platform to communicate with us here more, if here something happens, or something is not ok, I always have to find some specific posts up here in steemit to get some information what's going on, and that's annoying.
Why you STEEMIT do not have one link here on the front of each page, which I can immediately see information about what's going on, and new updates.
I like steemit, and very .... It's been open lot of doors for me a whole summer, and I do not want to see this place go cold.
I just say... I am not mad.

And recently here was a hacker attack, a few days ago.
Would anyone be able to properly tell me ...what was the mission of this attack?
For me, this attack looked absolutely absurd.

I'm sorry, my English language is weak.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your thoughts, @foxkoit! I'm glad we agree on this point of view :-)

And recently here was a hacker attack, a few days ago.
Would anyone be able to properly tell me ...what was the mission of this attack?

Usually these DDos attacks are run to weaken a platform.
But it's not officially confirmed that these attacks are still the reason for the website's downtimes.

And that is basically the problem: we have no idea.

I see this too they want make week this steemit... when they use DDos attacks. But why?
To me this is not logical. Who benefits from it, and how? This is what I want know.

I think it does make sense. After a couple of weeks thinking, I made a post about it.

ok :) ... I go look what you post .

I have a theory about why steemit.com is so very slow. Would you like to hear it?

I'm not 100% sure it's completely accurate, but the current performance behavior does make sense to me now. And it's not all bad news..

Haha, so you're keeping the biggest secret on steemit? Enlighten us :-)
I'm pretty sure they're working day and night to fix some bugs. It would be awesome to be part of it.

Here's my analysis, I'd love to hear what you think about it:
https://steemit.com/steemit/@fitzgibbon/why-steemit-looks-broken-an-analysis

Cool! I will have a look at it :-)

Much appreciated, would love to learn what you think about it :)

Have.. been.. attempting.. to resteem.. post.. for 49mins and counting! Thanks @surfermarly as always speaking up!

Haha, don't give up! You just need to be pain in the ass with these resteems - lol
Thanks for your encouragement :-)

Of course it's very annoying. But - it will be fixed sometime. So we all have to be patient. I have a strong rule for myself:

Don't worry, be happy.

Especially if it's about steemit.

You know me: I'm happy most of the time :-)
But I'm also honest. And when things start to annoy me, then I do say that.

...preach... 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

We deserve to know whats going on and then we as a community have the responsibility to help as much as possible to get it back on track again. Let us know! The last few days steemit has been near impossible to use.

P.S This took me 5 attempts to submit a comment and about 15 minutes of my timesigh

Thanks for your patience and efforts :-) It seems that there are many people who try to submit their comments no matter what - even if it takes them an hour. That's pretty cute and a great plus to the community spirit. Still!
Let's see if we will be heard...

So true - I dont understand why there is not even a open statement ... Just talking about those SMTs won't help if the core thing ain't working!

An open statement would be HUGE.
The trustworthiness account needs a little boost...:-)

It's definitely laggy, don't understand why... Sometimes its unusable. Thanks for the post hopefully this will help :)

Yeah I really hope it will help, too :-)
Thanks for your encouragement.

Just finished my article and cant post it either!

DDoS attacks have been going on for weeks it seems :(

Hang in there!

(replied from chainbb.com cause nothing works on Steemit)

It's not a DDos attack. They're doing updates on the site.
I'm replying from busy.org, no way to post on steemit.com.

Lucky us, steemfest works offline!!! :-DDD

Are you sure it's not? The site is doing what it's been doing since the only piece of news as to why it's being so crappy :(

I'm suspicious that the UI update is a cover for not being able to stop the attacks!

Yay Steemfest to save the day!

I have no idea what's really going on. That's why I wrote this article :-)

https://busy.org/@steemitblog

That was the first, and only piece of communication i've seen. Steemy has been sulking since.

Where did you get the UI update info from? I might try my first post from here (now in busy land!)

Where did you get the UI update info from?

It was in a private convo, so I can't publish it :-)

I'm on busy, too. It takes me forever to reply to your comments here, the UI is so lame :-(

Ahh ok :)

Busy are revamping their UI too and I think it's an improvement - still, it's not Steemit!

Well i've had one in the making for a few days, i'll sneak it out now while no-one is looking! :D

Hey @abh12345 - I tried sent you a message through your wallet earlier - do you use Steemit.Chat? (sorry @surfermarly for the comment hijack, but I did also send you a message, on Steemit.Chat, so relevant for you too!).

Agree 100%! Took me 10 tries to post this comment. Ever since that DDos attack steemit is having issues.

10 times? OMG. Thanks for your patience and efforts, I really appreciate that :-)
I don't think that these downtimes have anything to do with DDos attacks. Maybe we will get some more information in Lisbon.

I was wondering when some if the vets would address this. The way you wrote this post is brilliant. 😊 Steemit has the potential to be HUGE! I can't imagine that "no one" thought of potential DDoS attacks?? I even tried to upvote a post earlier-no love. 😊 We we are all with you @surfermarley - let's hope our love affair with Steemit stands the test of time. ✌🏾

Thanks for your lovely feedback and the encouragement!
I have no idea if it's the consequence of an attack. I heard they were doing some updates, but since nothing has been confirmed officially, it's all just speculation.
Hope dies last :-)

Thanks for writing your post @surfermarly. Sometimes truth has to be spoken even if it's 'negative' criticism. You did it from the right heart space - assertive not aggressive.

I just wrote a post too on this on Saturday. It's so frustrating.

If more people wrote about it, then more people would see how we are all being affected.

Also, I can't claim my rewards which is annoying as I am trying to get my steem power up.

This is my 7th try to post this comment!!!! argh!!!!!!!!! Why am I bothering? I want my point recorded. :)

Actually I didn't want to sound too negative here.
People are frustrated, ok. But that is mostly due to the lack of communication - and not to the laggy website.

Thanks for being so patient. The fact that you tried to submit your comment seven times means that you are also fully committed to this great community :-)
Let's try to focus on the good!

I find myself using my old Facebook account more and more, just to see something work properly.

LOL - not sure if this may be the ultimate solution to all of our problems :-D

aww I feel you girlfran! Hope steemit is up and running smoothly soon! Hanging in there! :) I love Steemit so much too!!!

Acroyoga works perfectly offline, so I'm pretty relaxed - lol!
See you in a week!!! :-*

hehehe :) Yes! ekkkkk!

I’ve been using the eSteem app and it’s a very good interface with the STEEM blockchain

I have a shitty old iPhone 5, so I don't use steemit on my smartphone but just with my computer. Apps don't make too much sense for me though. But thanks for the hint :-)

Go On shout yourself a nice new IPhone. Maybe we should start a fund raiser for you.😜

i have been so frustrated lately -- the whole site is not working - i cant transfer money on the internal exchange and asked on a blog and no one answered me - my posts are earning less than ever and i watch the spinning circle for minutes to post any reply -- i doubt this will ever get loaded but i will try. i hope they are working to fix it and not just cashing out and laughing at us.

To be honest I don't do any transfers right now. I'm too afraid of losing money. The site is really not stable.

I sure hope they can get these problems solved soon. Steemit is not going to be a viable platform if we can't solve these problems.

Good post. And totally agreed. Let's hope there's something big in the pipeline. @lukestokes posted something very level headed and fair about this - more communication needed as a bare minimum! Otherwise I fear a lot of people will move on and the idea will crash and burn...

Yeah I read and resteemed Luke's post which also included some really good points.
It's important to communicate - even (or especially) when things are not alright. It's like in any good working relationship here :-)

Haha yeah it's true. Don't let Steem treat you that way guuuuuurl.

But for reals, they need a more dedicated team with better comms. It'd be really great to see a roadmap for these kind of things even if it's WIP. I'd rather see information chop and change, timelines not be hit or whatever but AT LEAST have visibility on their aspirations for the platform, than nothing at all but scrolling wheels and lost comments!

While it's absolutely understandable that dealing with a heavy attack of such an unconventional website would take some time to resolve, you are right that keeping the community informed of the progress was something that should have been done.

When people are kept in the dark, that's when they really get worried, frustrated and start losing trust. I haven't, but I still understand why it would have that effect.

Thanks for your understanding @rocking-dave.
I'm not losing trust, I just kindly asked for more transparency. But hey: last night @ned posted a little statement, so that was pretty cool and definitely a step into the right direction :-)

Oh, I definitely get the call for transparency. Keeping in mind the values embodied by the steem blockchain, the call shouldn't have been needed. Unfortunately, it was/is.

Hopefully they have learned the lesson and will not keep us in the dark in the future.

Absolutely love this! It's about time more of the users who have been around for longer and have more power on the platform begin to point these issues out. As you pointed out, steemit.com needs to be fixed for many reasons that I will not repeat but I will say this. When the problem first began we were coming off of a surge in Steem price due to the announcement of SMTs. A small correction was expected but we have now given it all back and we finally just broke threw a resitance line at around $1USD that had been holding strong for quite some time. The price of Steem, I believe, is taking a beating as people are beginning to lose faith. It's so sad to me as I have even had to pull back.
In crypto, there is a major opportunity cost as when one invests in something, there are plenty of other investments one could make with other benefits. I don't have much in the platform, but I can not continue to see the investment tank and keep it in when there is about to be a run on alts following the bitcoin hardfork. As the power down takes time, I hope we do have some sort of a run so I at least can recoup what I out in and swing it into a couple other investments.
This is not me quitting, it's me taking some of my assets out and stepping back until the site is again reliable. Something I immediately fell in love with, it pains me to see these problems a few the lack of action to address them, to the point I have no other choice but to step back for awhile.
Hopefully those with more clout will be listened to and there ideas for correction acted upon. Thanks for bringing this to light and to a much bigger audience than many of us could have. I have resteemed to my followers as well. Thanks again and I hope the future is still as bright as I once thought it was.

Wow, thanks for your comment which could be easily an article on its own. Great read!
There is this saying that 'The biggest expense is opportunity cost'. That may especially apply to the crypto world. By copying these magazine publications I wanted to point out the fact that many interesting people might be looking on the site right now and that it's a pitty that we cannot present ourselves from the very best angle right now. I think the timing for these updates hasn't been very smart.

Anyways, as in every good working company (especially in open corporations) stakeholders should be well informed. The HQ is facing some serious issues? Well then let us know. Keeping people in suspense is never a good idea, especially when they've invested a considerable amount of money into the business (or as you said are potential new investors).

Again thanks for your time and valuable thoughts! I will try to follow you if the site allows it.

wao great @surfermarily, you point out the issues that faced by maximum steamers. what you say in your article definitely i am thinking about that issues but i think i couldnt expressed better than you. thanks a lot for sharing such a great article... keep it up.
Steem on...!

You are welcome, thanks for your support :-)

I had to use eSteem to upvote this.

I'm using busy.org to reply to all these amazing comments here.
Every time you submit a comment here, the whole thread closes and you have to reopen it again and scroll down to the point where you were at. Uffff that will take me the whole night... lol

For some reason, busy.org is blocked at work, but steemit.com is not.

When I get home, I can use busy.org. Then I have to catch up on my favourite steemians. :-P

Thanks for writing this. I was thinking of a rant myself. Something to do while I wait for my post to get through on Steemit...took more than five minutes.
Now i'm on busy, but I don't know how to format and add a ton on pictures here, so I'm stuck on Steemit!
If we're so fed up with seeing "loading" circle on our screens, imagine someone just checking out this site!!

Now i'm on busy, but I don't know how to format and add a ton on pictures here, so I'm stuck on Steemit!

Is there even a way to format posts on busy? I have no idea. I also tried to post there but then gave up :-(

Uhoh, I just noticed my comment didn't post from a couple hours ago. Nice post and very timely. I hope the site gets the attention it needs!

Uhoh, I just noticed my comment didn't post from a couple hours ago.

We need maps for the comments we leave - then we can double check if they were really written on the blockchain or not :-D

That's why I save a copy before I post now. Ugh! Scary to have it eaten up.

That can't be the solution...:-)

very good post, is your concern as of many of the users that we are every day within the social network, I am of the new, enter in August and I am really surprised by what is and excited about what can become this great and beautiful project, I hope that all the users who are here think the same as you, this is going to lead to the growth is exponential. Thank you very much for sharing your feelings! Greetings.

Yea agree with your concerns .. I've or we've all been noticing lately of the steemIt platform not performing at it's utmost capacity in the past one month. We'll see where it goes.

I hope at Steemfest there will be some communication form them regarding all this and maybe even some improvements launch to coincide with the event.

There has been a short statement published by Ned a couple of hours ago :-)

You said it perfectly. I hope there is someone who will solve the issue. I faced problem with commenting today, it wouldn't publish until 3-4 try.

Good point, I tried posting since yesterday however my post disappeared ...just tried again today and still no success untill now . Its very anoying indeed and it seems that the guys here are not capable to take care of the bug or what? thanks for sharing your thoughts

It must be a serious problem.

I agree with this post. As a new user whose account just got approved, I saw a lot of time for simple transactions. When you click on Upvote, it takes more than 15 secs sometimes to register the vote. Whats more, sometimes the vote does not register itself. So I need to verify its success.

Also the page load time is long. Hope Steemit team fix these issues soon :)

Congratulations @surfermarly!

You said it beautifully. Let's just hope someone is paying attention and communicates the truth back to us. Many thanks. 🐓🐓

A postive note that the platform seems to be working remarkably better this morning. Let's hope it continues.❤
