I wouldn't change a word that I wrote two decades ago. Yes, twenty years ago--when I had just launched my consulting company, Championship Communication--I listed what I considered the 10 keys to captivating communication.
As I read through them recently (on a bookmark that I had distributed to 5,000 clients who had attended my speeches and seminars or become my speech coaching clients), I decided quickly I wouldn't edit the list at all. No additions, deletions, or wordsmithing.
Why? Because despite the vast changes in technology that have altered the methods we use to communicate, the guidelines I identified remain essential.
Here are those timeless 10 Keys to Captivating Communication.
Listen intently
People will call you a great conversationalist
Write simply
Big words impress us only in the dictionary
Tell stories
All our lives we love "once upon a time"
Ask questions
Questions show you're vitally interested in others
Record yourself
Video checkups bring amazing changes
Send notes
Handwritten notes make you unforgettable
Remember names
Recalling a name opens a heart and a mind
Stay brief
Short talks establish long friendships
Be open
"I may be mistaken" removes barriers
Introduce yourself
Eagerness to communicate will captivate
My next step: produce another bookmark with these powerful communication guidelines. I want to keep reminding people about these basic steps that will improve sales, leadership, teamwork, customer service--and profits!
