Decentered Media Podcast 097 - What's the Role for Community-Focussed Communications?

As Leicester continues with it’s ongoing lockdown, which is the longest continuous period of lockdown for any place in the UK, there is a need to revaluate the role that community-focussed communication has played in facilitating understanding of the social distancing and shielding requirements of the pandemic. Now, with the expected rollout of the Covid-19 vaccines, it’s essential that public trust is nurtured, especially if misinformation is to be countered. This conversation brings together four experts in civic engagement and community support in Leicester.

Mukesh Barot is the Chief Officer of Healthwatch Leicester and Leicestershire. Healthwatch works to ensure that local people’s views help shape health and social care services. Mukesh has a background in Equality Diversity and Inclusion, and has worked across the NHS. In his spare time, he is also a well-established International session musician.

Jenny Hand is the CEO of Reaching People, who are dedicated to improving leadership and management capacity within the voluntary sector in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Jenny has an active interest in social policy, equality, partnership, leadership and management of change. Jenny is also an active musician, playing with Leicester Symphony Orchestra, where she plays cello.

Kieran Breen is the CEO of Leicestershire Cares. Leicestershire Cares brokers partnerships and creates opportunities across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, that enable the business sector to understand community needs, contribute to the growth of inclusive and safe communities. Kieran has spent thirty years working in the development sector in the UK, East Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean and Canada.

Edward Cartwright is Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics and Marketing at De Montfort University, and is the director of the Institute for Applied Economics and Social Value. Edward’s main research interests are in behavioural economics, game theory and public economics. Much of his research analyses cooperation in small groups, exploring the role of social norms, leadership, framing and communication.
