Although I'm not a big fan of birds (because I just can't cuddle them like all other fluffy animals), I have to show you my mother-in-law's colorful bunch. For them. my partner and I made a big cage on wheels - approximately 1m x 1,5 m x 1,5 m, so she can drive them outside through the warm spring and summer to enjoy a little nature around, although still in captivity.

Very pretty birdies. I used to have three budgies....a white one, Snowy, a green one, Max and a peach one, I can't remember the name.
I kept the birds too close to my kitchen and Max passed out - he died. We figured it was from carbon monoxide from the stove. Keeping a bird cage near a kitchen is dangerous - who knew? I ended up giving the other two birds to my daughters friend - they had a large bird sanctuary in their yard.
Never again. I was so crushed that I killed Max. :(
I do love listening to their chattering and chirping.
I believe you... I also take it hard, when something bad happens to the animals in my belonging. But in your case, I think the birdies like the bigger space for sure. But if you are surrounded by nature, then the lack of birds around isn't the issue.
