I'm no expert, but it was out during the day and was really colorful, more so than the picture would suggest. The 'eyes' on the wings were a kind of an irridescent purply color. All to me says butterfly. It has got a fat furry body though, which maybe suggests moth, but perhaps it's just got some weight issues, which we should be careful not to be too judgemental about...
I haven't seen very many butterflies here in the U.S. lately. It's a shame because they are one of the few insects that are a joy to look at. Even the slightly obese ones...... lol

Same here, I remember several varieties as a child, red admiral and cabbage whites, but see very few of either now.
