I snapped this photo while I was staying on the Island of Gili Trawangan, a short ferry ride from the mainland of Lombok, Indonesia. It was a few days of surfing, snorkling, drinks on the beach and delicious buffet style vegetarian food at the street market.
Unfortunately, previous generations of fisherman around the atolls were fond of using dynamite to land their catch, resulting in a loss of around 70% of the shallow reefs. In more recent times, fisherman have banded together to stop the bombing by setting up patrols and supporting the development of biorock reef structures in efforts to regenerate what has been lost, and protect the natural beauty that remains.
