Oymyakon, Russia -88F say what the fuck?

in #cold7 years ago (edited)

For those of you who never heard of Oymyakon it's just known as the coldest town on Earth. A nickname that is completely warranted because between Dec 1 and Mar 1 the temperature does not go above zero Fahrenheit. Just to give you some perspective here space.com has the average Martian temperature at -80F, so this place is as cold as Mars.

The people who live and visit this area take pride in their weather, being in International Falls, Minnesota this is something that I can relate to. Kids still go to school in Oymyakon when it is -40F, that is the threshold in which the state of Minnesota cancels schools statewide. International Falls also doesn't cancel school unless it reaches colder than -40F. Here in International Falls we have a winter festival known as ice box days as it is affectionately called here in Minnesota. In Oymyakon apparently they have thermal hot springs in which some Chinese tourists went swimming outside in the brutal cold.

That's not to say that the cold doesn't bring its own share of tragedy. In the US most of us are more keenly aware of heat exhaustion when it gets to be hot. Two guys were found in Oymyakon frozen to death trying to walk to get help to fix their broken down car. That is something people in Minnesota prepare for by putting blankets and food in their trunks in case the worse case scenario does happen.

Lol, Minnesota winters. I lived there for a couple years and my family has a Cabin on Lake Vermillion that I used to visit. Winters there were crazy. First time I went there was in the middle of a snowstorm. Next day some of my family headed out on snowmobiles for close to a hundred miles of riding in the fresh powder. If I remember correctly International Falls is pretty 'close...' for avid winter sports people, hehe.

Greetings from LA and stay warm out there!

Found this on the PAL #postpromotion channel.

It gets cold here but not -88F lol, I want to ask the Goracle where is my global warming at....

Lol. It's climate change. Give it a couple decades and it will be a few degrees warmer. There might not be vegetation or sea life, but it will be warmer :)

Oh i believe its climate change just not the kind you have in mind....Grand Solar Minimum it's effects are just beginning in 5 years people are going to be wishing global warming was man made. Climate is cyclical not linear the scam will come out I see the beginnings right now

The unfortunate thing is that time will tell, either way it's not good for most of us.

In any case our infrastructure needs work and prepare for the food riots and food price hikes. They are currently going on in Sudan and Madagascar but it'd be in Europe and eventually North America soon enough.

I really wish this stuff was doom-saying and unrealistic...but the scary bit is that it's all possible, and possible soon :\

Wow that's amazing
