Se trata de una imagen inusual no sólo por el tierno momento que refleja, sino porque captó una especie en peligro de extinción que, alegremente, se está reproduciendo: la foto de un padre cocodrilo que carga a sus más de 100 hijos y que ha cautivado a los amantes de la naturaleza.

La instantánea capturó a un Gavialis gangeticus, conocido como gavial del Ganges, de unos cuatro metros de longitud con sus crías a cuestas, al menos un centenar de pequeños lagartos, nadando en el Santuario Nacional Chambal, en Uttar Pradesh, India.

El autor de la imagen, el fotógrafo Dhritiman Mukherjee, la compartió en su cuenta de Twitter y explicó que los gaviales machos son muy agresivos y protectores con sus crías, pues el macho “asume la gran responsabilidad de proteger a los bebés y se convierte en un gran padre”. Mukherjee participa en el concurso de Fotógrafo de Vida Silvestre del Año, organizado por el Museo de Historia Natural de Londres.

The snapshot captured a Gavialis gangeticus, known as the Ganges gharial, about four meters long with their young in tow, at least a hundred small lizards, swimming at the Chambal National Sanctuary in Uttar Pradesh, India.

The author of the image, photographer Dhritiman Mukherjee, shared it on his Twitter account and explained that male gharials are very aggressive and protective of their young, as the male “assumes the great responsibility of protecting babies and becomes a great father ”. Mukherjee is participating in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, organized by the Natural History Museum, London.
