Overcoming Depression

Matthew 4:24

"And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatic, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.

In this passage, four groups of people are mentioned whom Jesus healed. First, those who have diseases, second are those who are possessed by demons, third are the lunatics or insane people and lastly are the ones who are paralyzed. In the Bible, there are times that when things are stated, the further the thing is mentioned the more important it is. This passage is one of those times. Out of these four groups of people, one may think that being demon possessed is the worst of them all. But have you noticed that the lunatics and paralyzed are mentioned further than those who are demon possessed? This shows that being insane and paralyzed are far worse than having diseases or being demon possessed. Why is it so?

Well, after believing in Jesus you are sealed by the Holy Spirit. You become God's temple and his Spirit lives in you and will never leave you. This exempts you from being possessed by devils. For God will never allow his temple to be inhabited by demonic spirits. God doesn't want to have an evil roommate. On the other hand, being a lunatic and paralyzed are self inflicting conditions which make it worse than being demon possessed. You may be exempted from being possessed but you may qualify yourself from being a lunatic or paralyzed. You may still develop insanity and paralysis even with the presence of God living inside of you. This makes it a more serious case than demon possession.

Now, most people think that only those who have mental issues are the ones who are insane. But did you know that being depressed, stressed, condemned or heartbroken are also forms of insanity? Sad to say, even many Christians are experiencing insanity all the time without knowing it. When you look at the word "lunatic" in the Greek, it is also the same as being moonstruck which means being crazy out of love. This applies to those who are being depressed and stressed due to not receiving enough love, affection and appreciation that they wanted. Failed marriages and relationships, peer pressure, broken family or even bankruptcy leads to this case. Anyone who are going through depression are experiencing insanity.

None of us are exempted when it comes to experiencing depression. I know that we all face this kind of problem though in different ways or areas of our lives. I have tried many ways to overcome depression but at the end of the day I still end up sleeping with a broken heart.

When you are at the end of your rope and is about to fall on a pit, you'll have no other option but to call for help. The only way that worked for me in overcoming depression is to call Jesus for S.O.S. This might sound foolish and pathetic especially living in a world that values evidence and sight more than faith. But I assure you, there ain't no other way you'll overcome depression. Most treatments that the world offers in curing depression are just like applying patches on a cancer. They just deal the problem on the surface level not in the very root itself. Depression is a spirititual problem so the only way to deal it is through a spiritual way.

Do you know that the name of "Jesus" means "God saves?" And the word "save" also means making you well and whole. The very job of Jesus is to save you from every problems that you are facing. It is his delight to deliver you out of the tough situation that you are in. He even said that "I came to serve, not to be served."

I started overcoming depression after allowing Jesus to minister in my life. Though I cannot see him with my physical eyes I just know that He is doing something in my life every time I ask for His help. I realized that when you stopped being wise in your own estimation and start trusting like a child in His word that true freedom from every bondage can be attained. I hope to encourage someone who is going through hard times with this article. I pray that you would ask Jesus to minister in your life today and experience victory over condemnation and depression.

This a fantastic article! I agree completely. Jesus really is the hope to the hopeless. I have experienced His comfort and faithfulness through many rough seasons. His comfort really does bring complete healing

Absolutely! No kind of comfort can ever be compared to what Jesus gives. Experiencing his love is the best medication one can ever have. Thanks for the response. @handstoheal

Thanks! Nice to meet you @daveks

Those who try to carry the cross alone will be crushed by it.

The Lord is the ONLY way to genuine peace. Everything else is just a temporary cover upon the gaping wound of our fallen humanity.

I torally agree. Christ is the answer for all our needs. We can try to find other ways but they only give temporal effects. The effect that Christ gives is eternal.
