Luke 12:47-48(GNB)
The servant who knows what his master wants him to do but does not get himself ready and do it, will be punished with a heavy whipping. But the servant who does not know what what his master wants and yet does something for which he deserves a whipping will be punished with a light whipping . Much is required from the person to whom much is given; much more is required from the person to whom much more is given.
Our responsibilities come with consequences that apply when we fail. The punishment that applies however depends on our level of understanding of such responsibilities. For instance if you committed a crime with your much younger sibling will you protest if he/she is given a lighter punishment than you (even if he/she spearheaded the event)? I don't think so.
Verse 48 emphasises that though there may be a leverage, there's no excuse for not knowing what is expected of us - as God children. However, it is not enough to know, we must do. "Its application is the essence of the knowledge we have".
By God's grace, we'll live up to His expectations.
