Store Up Treasures in Heaven – Inspirational ORIGINAL ART #23. PLUS FREE WALLPAPER!

The selected art verse idea comes from @violetmed.

In a recent post, she asked me if I’d ever made something for these verses. I was excited that someone actually took me up on my offer to design a verse for them (see Feedback section below). And what a great verse to meditate on!

The full verse says:

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.
-Matthew 6:19-20

Physically speaking, money makes the world go round and our day to day life can be consumed by the pursuit of it. It seems we need earthly treasures for everything…travel, food, shelter, energy, recreation, clothing and so on. Yet we are encouraged to trust God. He knows our needs.

We can read more on trusting in Matthew 6:

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

Therefore, do not worry…

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

That is why we can be confident putting our focus instead on heavenly treasures. They are secure and everlasting. God will make sure we don’t miss out. He knows our needs and can see the desires of our heart.

How I Came Up With the Design

@violetmed didn’t give me any specific directions other than she liked yellow and light blue. I chose a color palette leaning towards that and tried out a bunch of design options. Sometimes too much freedom overwhelms me with possibilities!

In this case, I settled on a berry and leaf theme. In my mind, I was associating earthly treasures with the example Jesus gave about birds gathering in food (berries) and God taking care of their needs. I worked that theme as a pattern in the background and then larger by the verse to tie it together. The last piece is choosing fonts that call out the key words, so that at a glance you can bring to remembrance the encouragement of the whole verse.

Woo, awesome work here. That little circle graphic and text treatment is really well done! Great job on the wallpaper too! Are you using it yourself now? :)

Yup, had to test it out first ;)

I love the artwork and the message that you have conveyed! It is so true that we must put first things first. Sometimes people act as if God is frugal and doesn't want to bless His children but it is quite the opposite. The Lord always wants to see where our heart is.

Just like the story of the rich young ruler who wanted to inherit eternal life in Matthew 19:16-22. The ruler could not find it within himself to make the decision to follow Christ. Jesus told him to give up all his possessions and follow Him but the ruler walked away sad not knowing that what Jesus had for him was much more than the multitude of treasures he had obtained.

Psalms 37:4-5 says - "Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass."

Give all to God because you cannot beat God giving!

Thank you for your encouraging reply. You are right! We serve a generous God who cares not only about what we need but also the desires of our heart.

I find it very creative, and thanks for those religious words, for some reason I use you as a tool to expand that knowledge.

Love this design and the thought process behind it! Great work!

Hello. Thank you for sharing how you think in the midst of your design process and the way each element is in a sense a devotional act in and of itself. It was fun to feel like I was sitting over your shoulder in the midst of your discernment and getting to peek as you are engaging your craft. I tend to work with words, you gave me a glimpse into image and color today. Thanks for that. @genxrev

It turned out great @allforthegood. Thank you, I just printed it out!
