The punishment God has declare for sin is death. God declare this to Adam right from the garden of eden.
"But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shall not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die"( Genesia 2:17).
God has continued to state throughout the scripture that "... The soul that sinneth shall die" (Ezekiel 18:20). Man died spiritually, and then began to die emotionally, mentally and physically. For man to be save from death, someone had to die in man's place; a substitude had to die on man's behalf.
Jesus came as a lamb of God, to die and carry the sins of the world. " The next day john seeth jesus coming unto him, and saith, behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world"(john 1:29). Jesus, the sinless son of God came to shed His blood for the washing away of sins and for our redemption. "Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear son: in whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins"(Colossian 1:13-14). Out of the great live God has for man, Jesus took our sin and death and laid down his life for us. He died so that we might luve .He paid our debt of death that we might go free. Those who repent and luve the life Jesus gives, escape the punishment of death in hell fire.
"Greater live hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend" ( John 15:14)
Why did Jesus die?
Jesus died to pay death penalty that should have been ours. He died that we might live through him.
