Few things influencing cognitive development in children

in #children7 years ago

We love to see our kids with the ability to learn fast. In other words, cognitive skills, which are associated with learning skills like memory and thinking, help children to take decisions by evaluating and analyzing the situation and by comprehending them. Although neuroscience is such a complex subject to learn, understanding how some things affect in the first place is requisite.

We have already known the fact that human brain is special and it has around 86 billion neurons that uses almost 25% of our daily calorie intake. Therefore, it is consuming as much as the energy it wants, which is being only around 2 percent of our body weight. Here are the few things that affect kids’ learning abilities.

Learning a new language

Helping your kids to learn new language at younger stages help children to improve learning skills. There is an evidence that child who learns new language in a short period of time will show a significant impact on brain development. Because learning a language is not an easy task, it does require memorizing a massive amount of vocabulary and ability to understand grammar, which has to be linked to native language in order to understand in the initial stages. However, there has been another debate that it does not affect overall function of the brain. Whatever the answer may be learning a new language or being bilingual can help us in longer run.

Home learning environment

It does have a huge impact according to many researchers around the world. Here, parents play a crucial role as if they equip their children with necessary items such as needed books, toys, and being able to participate in activities with their kids, then they can find a significant improvement in learning skills of their children.

Our study confirms that strong home learning environments arm children with foundational skills that are springboards to long-term academic achievement. Source

Nurturing during early stages

Mothers usually play an important role when it comes to development of their kids. Because a study reveals that during preschool, the time is sensitive and more likely to respond to maternal support.

Children whose mothers were nurturing during the preschool years, as opposed to later in childhood, have more robust growth in brain structures associated with learning, memory and stress response than children with less supportive moms. Source

Learning new Hobbies

Hobbies such as dancing, singing and horse riding has proven that they influence in development of learning skills in children. Horse riding has a significant impact to improve the ability trough the vibrations while riding the horse, which stimulates learning abilities in children. On the other hand, musical training could possibly treat autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Experiencing music at an early age can contribute to better brain development, optimizing the creation and establishment of neural networks, and stimulating the existing brain tracts. Source

Yeah @dcrypto
I really agree with all you've listed above. And looking at them we see that a the family and the home has a very huge role to play in children's lives and there really is more to be done by us for the development of our children and younger ones.

Learning and playing chess has been proven to enhance one's brain ability, on top of what you have just listed above, thank for the post anyway

Very informative and good post for children learning improvement.

i agree

Parents have a big role to play in bring up the kid in the right way.
Home Learning environment is the key.
Some schools adapt chanting of ancient vedic mantras to enhance the child mental abilities.😊
Super brain yoga is also another activity.

Great article! Spanish is my first language and when I was a little kid my parents moved to Panama and I attended an american school there. So I learned English when I was 10 years old and a couple of years later started taking some piano/guitar lessons. So it helped me a lot with my learning skills, now I know why I keep learning new things every day which helps me a lot at work and in life. Regards.

Totally agree with the post !

Proper nutrition is another big element that is influencing the cognitive development in children. Nowadays the world is full of food without any important nutritional value. Not to mention that some of excess use of products like sugar and omega-6 fatty foods.

I agree with you @dcrypto . Kids learn easily when we give them words of encouragement, we show confidence in them and we allow them to grow. We give them responsibilities and make them feel appreciated in their everything they do. Learning these things at home and nurturing their development is very vital for their growth as an individual. We should always show them that they are loved and lead them to the right path all the time.

Thank for sharing this wonderful post! Resteemed!

Believe it or not, encouraging a child by telling them how smart or how talented they are can have a massive effect to the development of their brain and influence the child's cognitive development. Kids absorb love and the more they receive the healthier and smarter they become.

Yes, I agree with that.

Very important topic! I worked in a youth centre for a year and you could clearly see which children have parents who are promoting the development of their kids and who care way too less about them. Supporting children in any possible way is extremely important! The kids were so grateful when I painted, handicrafted, played, read, sang and discovered nature with them. :)

Well composed articulately written post.
Parents do have a great deal of role to help foster adequate and timely learning of their children.
Unfortunately, some parents have left the bulk of their children's training to the teachers only.
Truly, hobbies influences learning skills in children.

Couldn't agree more with what you list here, not sure if you've ever read the book - Mindset by Carol Dweck, if not i'd definitely recommend. It touches on this subject and offers a perspective of how we develop our kids...

Thanks for suggesting the book. I have been researching about the children's abilities for many days now. So I managed to write the post. Yes, there are other things need to be considered but I've already mentioned that these are only few things and I believe these are important.

You’re welcome, it’s a very eye opening book. I may have some more recommendations for you also. It’s something I’m very interested in since I have a 3 year old son.

Having parents that play with kids when they are very young probably is the most important factor to influence their cognitive development. Structured learning is good, but not always working.

Honestly, in Ghana most parents don't give much attention to the things you are saying here ooo. I am a victim. At tender age I have to fight for my survival and I had no one controlling or providing for me such enabling environment. I Pray I children will receive better treatment.
THANKS FOR YOUR EDUCATIVE POST.... 👍

I think it's important to help children with their emotional development as much as possible. Every parent should be like a therapist to their child.
