NGOs are organisations that focusses their efforts towards addressing several issues disturbing the balance and ecosystem of the society and the world at large. These organisations either work completely independent of government involvement or work in partnership with governments called as the public private partnership. However, in both the operational model, the core factor that drives NGOs is the willingness and determination to bring about a sustainable change in the society. NGOs work at local, national, and global levels thereby bringing changes right from the grassroot level. Be it an NGO in India or any other country, they require steadfast support from the community to progress in their respective goals.
Why should we support NGO?
Before we delve into the impact of our support to NGOs, let’s answer this first, ‘When there is a problem at our home, don’t we instantly jump in to offer help?’ Well, most of us will respond as ‘Yes’. So, when the society is struggling with some critical issue, shouldn’t we get involved to resolve it? Practically, yes.
Let’s take an example: you are an educated individual and are taking care of your family in the best way you can. You have a secure job, a good place to live, resources to send your children to school, provide good food to the family, and the like. When your children grow up, they too will be resourceful like you. On the other hand, just a few metres away from your home, there is a colony of daily wage workers. Their socio-economic condition is totally opposite from that of yours. Do you think their children will be resourceful in the near future? Quite possibly, no. The irony is, children belonging to both sides of the society will soon have to shoulder responsibilities in the future. And, if we don’t step forward to support, the society and the world at large will remain clasped in the vicious cycle of poverty-hunger-illiteracy. If more than half the population in the country falls in the dependent category, then you can imagine the status of individual progress! So, more than anything, it is our responsibility to support NGO.
Donate to NGOs
India is home to more than 3-lakh registered NGOs. These NGOs work for several causes related to health, education, children, rights, women, environment, and many more. When we support an NGO in India, we directly get involved in transforming the country’s future by empowering citizens and uplifting the whole ecosystem of the nation. As an example, let’s look at the difference that supporters made in the journey of The Akshaya Patra Foundation, a 19-year old mid-day meal NGO in India. Established in 2000, this NGO provide free school meals to 1,500 children in 5 Government schools of Bengaluru. Eventually, the Foundation partnered with the Government and also mobilised community support. Today, Akshaya Patra is one of the finest examples of a public-private partnership and the Foundation’s progress over the years showcase its success:
If supporters and donors wouldn’t have come forward to donate to children, the above-mentioned progress wouldn’t have been a possibility. Akshaya Patra’s efforts of supporting education of children belonging to challenging socio-economic background by providing freshly cooked, nutritious, and locally palatable meals to school children on each school day is also in alignment with UN SDGs: Zero Hunger and Quality Education.
