A little bit of context
Ben and Lyn Covelli went to Nepal for the first time in 1981 for their honeymoon. They instantly fell in love with such a beautiful country and its' people and have travelled back there on numerous occasions.

As you are aware Nepal was hit by some devastating Earthquakes In April and May of 2015. Very soon after the earthquake struck, Ben went back to see how he could assist. With the generous assistance and donations from extended family he arranged for the purchase and distribution of rice to 50 families in one village and corrugated iron sheeting to make shelter for 65 families in another village.

But there’s a problem
As a result of these devastating earthquakes thousands of homes were destroyed and hundreds of thousands of people had to live in temporary shelter, many just under plastic sheets and tents. Knowing that hundreds of schools had been destroyed Lyn and Ben decided they would like to assist longer term by providing education to primary school children.

Here’s what we’re doing about it
Ben has since returned to the village where he distributed the corrugated sheeting. He and the villagers have set up an NGO and have started a primary school in the village since the government school was destroyed. The new school, Chaughada Progressive English School, is currently in a temporary location. Ben has since purchased land for the construction of a permanent school building. Lyn and Ben have been funding the ongoing expenses, purchasing all equipment and buying school uniforms, books and stationery for all the children. They have at times received donations from friends and family which has assisted in funding the school.

Education for all the children is free. There are currently 180 kids at the school and 9 teachers. The principal is Montessori trained and has more than 20 years of experience. Ben and Lyn place a lot of emphasis on creative education that will enable kids to express themselves through sports, singing, art, painting as well the normal academic education.

You can join us
We're looking for financial assistance beyond our current resources to assist in the construction of an eco friendly, sustainable and earthquake resistant school and also to be able to grow the project.

The new school will have 9 classrooms, a staff room, office/storage and toilets. The aim is to build the school using local villagers and in the process train and educate them on the construction of eco friendly and earthquake resistant buildings.

The project has now been approved as a Rotary Australia Overseas Aid Fund supported by The Rotary Club Of Richmond (District 9800) and you can view our facebook page...Chaughada Progressive English School.

You can make a difference
Your donation will help with the building of the school which will provide a good education and a better future for the children. It will also benefit the local villagers who will gain and develop a new set of skills.
