Servers came back online not too long ago - I'm replaying the blockchain files now (which will take some time) and the indexers are running (slowly) pointed at the public steem nodes provided by steemit inc.
Will probably be mid day sunday before all is caught up.

You can't at the moment, but you can upload an image to any public hosting platform and then add it to your post like so:
