Muchas son las historias que giran alrededor de este personaje. Los más viejos lo recuerdan caminando por las calles, sucio, maloliente y desgreñado, los más jóvenes le tocan la barba a la escultura erigida en su honor en busca de suerte en la vida y proyectos futuros. Su nombre: José María López LLedín, pero nadie lo conocía así, porque para todos era: El Caballero de París.

La leyenda que lo envuelve, una de tantas que parten de una realidad distorsionada y que fusionada al folclor y la cultura habanera, ubican a esta ciudad capitalina como fuente de abasto de míticas historias con poderosísimos secretos, es la que les traigo hoy.

Cuentan que se enamoró de una mulata de busto visible e impresionante figura, de esas que a todos los hombres enloquece con su mirada, pero para desgracia de nuestro personaje, ese amor no fue correspondido y esto lo llevó a la locura.

Vagaba por las calles como un pordiosero, vestía de negro, con una larga capa, y en un bolso echaba cuanto se encontraba en sus andanzas. Entre sus manos afiladas siempre cargaba libros, diarios, revistas, y alguna que otra fruta tomada de algún jardín.

A pesar de su desaseada figura, la gente no lo rechazaba. Solía regalarles flores a las muchachas bellas, a los chicos solía regalarles caramelos. Saludaba a todos de una forma tierna y cariñosa. Su magia a la hora de comunicarse impresionaba. Hablaba de política, de religión, de filosofía con todo aquel que se le atravesara. No pedía ni aceptaba limosnas, solo algo para comer, y agradecía con su verbo elegante. Únicamente admitía dinero de las personas que conocía, y siempre retribuía con algún obsequio.

Tras su muerte, el 11 de julio de 1985, a la edad de 86 años en el hospital psiquiátrico de La Habana, Mazorra, sus restos fueron exhumados por el historiador de la ciudad, Eusebio Leal, y transferidos al convento de San Francisco de Asís, donde actualmente descansa. A la entrada de dicho lugar, una escultura en bronce creada por el artista cubano José Villa Soberón nos recibe, y fija a este célebre personaje para siempre en la historia.

The oldest people remember him walking around the streets, dirty, bad smelling and uncombed, the youngest peoples; touch the beard of the statue in his honor, looking to be lucky in life. His name was: Jose Maria LLedin, but nobody knew him that way, because for everybody he was the Gentleman from Paris.

The legend about him, one of those which come from a distorted reality, which joined to the folklore and havana culture, locate this capital city as a source of supply of mythical stories with very powerful secrets, is the one that I bring you today.

People say that he fell in love with a mulata , with a visible bust and impressive figure, one of this which make any men crazy with her look, but unfortunately, that love was not reciprocated and it got him crazy.

Hi roamed the streets like a beggar, dressed in black, with a long cape and a dirty bag where hi used to throw what he found in his wanderings around Havana. Between his sharp hands, he always carried books, newspapers, magazines, and one which another fruit taken from some garden.

Despite, his dirty figure, people did not reject him. He used to give flowers to the pretty girls, and candies to the boys. Jose greeted everyone in a sweet and loving way. His magic to communicating impressed everybody. He talked about politics, philosophy, religion, with anyone who crossed him.
Did not ask or accept alms, just something to eat and thanks with his elegant way of speaking. He only accepted money from anyone he knew, and always returned with a gift.

After his death, July 11, 1985, at the age of 86 years, in the psychiatric hospital in Havana, Mazorra, his remains were exhumed by the city’s historian Eusebio Leal, and transferred to the San Francisco de Asis convent where he currently rests. At the entrance of said place, a bronze sculpture created by the Cuban artist Jose Villa Soberon welcomes us, and fixes this famous character forever in history.
