Steemit Censorship

Wasn't Steemit supposed to be a platform where anyone could post anything without the fear of censorship, wasn't that the selling point of Steemit?

Recently i've come across many articles which talk about controversial topics like the New Zealand shootings which got good reception (high upvotes) but the article made no money and is censored and "not visible due to low ratings".

This has got to be a big joke , "Disagreement on Rewards" ? Really , so now people who have a dislike towards a poster , who have an axe to grind will simply flag their content until its "not visible due to low ratings". Its insane , I don't use Steemit all that much but i saw it as a valuable part of the community for what it stood for. Now its just like the rest of the Internet Giants.
