Censorship on Centralized Platforms

in #censorship6 years ago

I decided to check out the bitcointalk forum a place I haven't really been back to since I discovered Steemit. Not much has changed, but wanted to see if I could post some links to the blog I was starting.

While cruising around I decided to see what was going on in the altcoin section. I found a post about earning PIVX passively. He stated he had crappy internet which made staking pretty much impossible and was wondering if it was any easier.

I took the time to leave a comment and left a link to delease and one to @paulag article for her audit of dlease and explained he could easily gain around 16-18% apr powering up Steem and then using Dlease.

A few hours later I received an email saying that my comment had been deleted because it was off topic. While I cant disagree that it was off topic in that I wasn't talking about PIVX I thought it was on topic in that it gave him another option to earn passive income.

That is why censorship sucks. My comment was deleted never to be read again even though it might have helped the author discover a new altcoin project in which he could earn passive income. Weather my comment stayed or is deleted to never be seen again is based off the opinion of one moderator.

Helps me realize what makes Steem so special. Comments can be hidden or UIs can change what is or isnt seen by its users (to help eliminate spam), but there is a way to see everything that is written on the blockchain. If someone feels the post, comment, or whatever has enough value to them they can spend the time to find it. It is impossible (as far as I know) to silence anyone on the platform.

So many people complain about flags or getting comments downvoted until they are hidden, but just think of how it used to be where the value or repevance of your comment was in the hands of one or a few moderators who could erase everything you have ever done if they felt like it.

Steem is clearly superior which is why I will stay for the long run. I have been looking at starting to post elsewhere to bring Steem to the attention of friends and colleagues but often think I will run into this as well. It will be an interesting experiment!

I just made a suggestion in the steempeak discord about censorship and how we should move it from site owners into the hands of the post author.

Yeah. Its damn annoying seeing this.

I am not so much into how the censorship works cos I am new. But thanks for spreading this to help us find out more.

That sucks that they censored you post it may not have been totally on theme but it was related to what had been said

A Blockchain SOLUTION To Online Censorship Has Arrived And It’s Called POCKETNET!

Hey, @gniksivart.

I like how you've described how it works on STEEM. I've not been a proponent of flags, especially ones that seem to come indiscriminately, but as you say, if you look hard enough, you can find it. And grayed out posts or comments actually tend to draw attention more—they at least do to me. It's not so much a forbidden thing as it is, "What did they do that was so bad?" only to find out that in many cases (certainly not all—plenty are deserved) that some past abuse has them still in the doghouse, or they're being targeted because one big user doesn't like what they're saying, or they're caught in the crossfire.

However, as you say, that's pretty different than having the comment completely and totally removed.

re: Bitcoin forum

It's to bad they have gatekeepers (though they have a few uses), but I wonder just how much of your comment was off topic, and how much was giving him some place other than PIVX to go to, like STEEM. Is PIVX based on Bitcoin somehow? Uses it's codebase or something?

Anyway, hopefully they managed to read it before it was deleted. If not, maybe there's another way. :)
