Shorthair cats are well known all around the world and many owners love them for the independence they exhibit in the household. The relative easy care and affectionate temperament also appeal to people as they get the best of both worlds, a cat who enjoys being round its owner while not requiring a copious amount of time for grooming and other tasks. While shorthair coats are much shorter than the longhair variant, owners have come to appreciate the beauty of the shorthair in its own right. The emphasis of what a good looking cat shifted from coats to the form of the body, the cats stature.

New owners looking to get into cat keeping will be spoilt for choice from the shorthair range as the availability of them were abundant throughout the last few centuries. This lead to precise and calculated breeding programmes that were made possible to the readily available population. One of the most famous cats in the shorthair category is known as the British shorthair, hailing from the British Islands.

As the name suggests, the British shorthair cat is the famous national cat of the British empire. As mentioned in other posts, this type of cat emerged as a result of selective breeding that has reached a state in which high quality British shorthair cats are being produced in high volume. This cat has been recognised for a great number of years and is thought to have originated from cats that arrived onto the British Islands from Rome. This dates back many years ago and the pedigree of the British shorthair was one of the first to be recognised. To this very day, the British shorthair remains as one of the most bred cats in the world. Consistency is seen across the gene pool but a great colour and pattern variation has been maintained. This means that prospective owners will be spoilt for choice when looking for the catalogue of British Shorthair cats. Some of the more characteristic parts of the cat will relate to its rounded head and small ears.

The British shorthair cat carries a proud and tough as it carries itself as a muscular figure amongst other cats. Despite being one of the alpha cats in stature, it has a mellow and perhaps even placid attitude. This gives a great mix in personality to create a cat that is sturdy yet content with adapting to being domesticated in the household.
