When we attended the Omoda UK launch at Magazine London less than two months ago, it became crystal clear that Omoda is making quite the statement in the automotive industry. With the introduction of the Omoda 5 and its electric counterpart, the Omoda e5, the brand has positioned itself as a forward-thinking, tech-savvy alternative to more established names. We then got beyond excited when they invited us to get behind the wheel on the first leg of their 5 cities tour!
The Omoda 5, a petrol-powered compact SUV, and the Omoda e5, a fully electric version, share the same DNA but deliver two distinct driving experiences. Omoda has ensured that whether you opt for petrol or electric, you're getting a stylish, modern vehicle loaded with tech and safety features. But which one is better suited to your needs? Let’s take a closer look at how these two models compare.
Both the Omoda 5 and Omoda e5 have bold design language, built on Omoda’s “Art in Motion” philosophy. It’s a futuristic look that’s both functional and eye-catching, with smooth curves and sharp lines that enhance aerodynamics and give both vehicles a striking road presence:
• The petrol-powered Omoda 5 brings a dynamic look that feels ready for the open road. The diamond-pattern grille immediately draws attention, with intricate detailing that’s both aggressive and refined. The sharp headlights and bold lines along the body make this crossover stand out in a crowd. What really sells the look is how those curves and angles aren’t just about style—they help improve fuel efficiency by cutting through the air more cleanly. It’s a design that balances form and function beautifully.
• The electric Omoda e5 is equally stylish but with an added touch of futuristic minimalism. The closed-off grille is a dead giveaway of its electric nature, and the sleek, aerodynamic body gives it a smooth, high-tech appearance. LED lighting across the exterior emphasizes its modern design, while the flowing lines and lack of an exhaust system make it feel very forward-thinking. If you’re looking for something that screams "the future is now," the Omoda e5 might just be the car for you.
When it comes to performance, the Omoda 5 and Omoda e5 cater to different types of drivers. Are you a petrol enthusiast who enjoys the familiar feel of an internal combustion engine? Or are you ready to embrace the instant torque and quiet operation of an electric vehicle?
• The 5 comes equipped with a 1.6L turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 183 BHP and 270 Nm of torque. This front-wheel-drive SUV can hit 0-62 mph in 7.9 seconds, and it's paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT) for smooth gear shifts. While the official fuel economy sits around 30 mpg, we reckon you can squeeze out more on an eco-focused drive. It’s quick and nimble enough for everyday driving, with a solid balance of power and efficiency. However, the lack of an all-wheel-drive option might be a drawback for some, especially those in more rural areas or with a taste for adventure.
• The e5, on the other hand, is all about electric power, offering a 130 kW electric motor that delivers instant torque for fast and smooth acceleration. With a 0-62 mph time of under 7 seconds, it’s quicker off the mark than the petrol version. The 265-mile range (WLTP) is competitive for an EV in this segment, and the fast-charging capability means you can recharge from 20% to 80% in just under 30 minutes at a DC fast charger. It’s a quiet, refined drive that offers the typical instant response of an electric motor, making city driving a breeze.
In terms of performance, the Omoda 5 offers that familiar petrol-powered punch, while the Omoda e5 impresses with its electric efficiency and speed. If you’re making the switch to EVs, the e5 will undoubtedly excite you with its smooth, silent power delivery.
Both the Omoda 5 and Omoda e5 excel when it comes to interior features, but there are some notable differences that reflect the distinction between petrol and electric vehicles:
• Omoda 5: Inside, the cabin is a blend of premium materials and cutting-edge technology. The dual digital displays house the instrument cluster and infotainment system within a sleek 10.25-inch frame. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip, the system is fast and responsive, making it easy to use while driving. The combination of rotary dials and physical buttons adds a touch of familiarity, while features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and dual wireless charging pads make it feel thoroughly modern. The Sony 8-speaker sound system comes as standard, and if you upgrade to the Noble trim, you also get a panoramic sunroof and heated seats.
• The e5 takes all of these features and cranks it up a notch, especially in terms of tech-forward design. The fully digital instrument panel seamlessly integrates with the infotainment system, creating a minimalist, modern dashboard. The controls are more touch-based, giving the interior a sleek, futuristic feel. And thanks to over-the-air updates, the software is always up-to-date, ensuring that you’re always driving with the latest features. Like the Omoda 5, the e5 is equipped with the Sony 8-speaker sound system, and the cabin is incredibly quiet, making every journey feel more serene.
The Omoda e5 shines in terms of its high-tech, electric-focused interior, but the Omoda 5 provides a well-rounded, feature-packed cabin that balances tradition and innovation.
One thing both models have in common is their practicality. Whether you opt for the 5 or the e5, you’re getting a spacious SUV that’s perfect for families or those who need extra room for their gear:
• The 5 offers plenty of room, with 507 litres of boot space expanding even further with the rear seats folded down. The sporty front seats are comfortable for long journeys, and the rear passengers get plenty of head and legroom. With multiple USB ports and plenty of storage throughout the cabin, it’s designed with the modern family in mind. The Noble trim adds even more practicality with features like a power tailgate.
• The e5 offers similar practicality, but the flat rear floor (thanks to the electric battery layout) provides even more legroom for rear passengers. While the boot space is slightly reduced due to the placement of the battery, it’s still more than adequate for everyday use. Plus, the silent ride and instant power delivery make it perfect for city driving or long-distance road trips.
Safety is where both models excel. Both come packed with advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to make driving safer and easier:
• The petrol-powered 5 comes equipped with adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, collision avoidance, and a 360-degree camera in the higher trims. These features make urban driving and motorway journeys safer and less stressful.
• The electric e5 takes safety one step further with additional features like intelligent adaptive cruise control and active park assist, helping you navigate tight spaces and tricky parking situations. It’s also equipped with over-the-air updates that ensure your safety systems are always up to date.
Both models score high in safety, but the Omoda e5 offers slightly more advanced tech features, giving it the edge.
Omoda is aiming to provide premium vehicles at an affordable price point, and both models reflect this:
• The Omoda 5 starts at £25,235 for the Comfort trim, while the Noble trim is priced at £27,035. For what you get in terms of tech, features, and styling, this is excellent value compared to other crossovers in the segment.
• The Omoda e5 starts at £30,495, making it more expensive than the petrol version, but still competitively priced for an electric vehicle of its calibre. Considering its range, fast charging capabilities, and cutting-edge tech, it’s a great option for those looking to make the switch to electric without breaking the bank.
Ultimately, the choice between the Omoda 5 and Omoda e5 comes down to your driving preferences and whether you're ready to make the leap to electric. Both models deliver on Omoda’s promise of high-quality, high-tech vehicles, and whichever you choose, you’ll be driving into the future of mobility.
Thank you all, and enjoy!
