New KGM Torres | Petrol & Electric...Really? Yes

in #cars2 days ago

As many of you may remember, we have a real soft spot for SsangYong, so we were more than a little sad when the name change was approved. Luckily, the vehicles are still SsangYong’s at heart, and the most recent models we had on review was their new SUV – the Torres – and not only the petrol version, but the electric version too!

With that in mind, we bring you our comparison review of the latest SUV from KGM…

Starting with the Torres ICE K40, it boasts a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine delivering 163 PS and 260 Nm of torque. Its 6-speed automatic transmission provides smooth shifts, and the front-wheel-drive layout caters to urban and suburban terrains alike. A capable towing capacity of 1.5 tonnes adds versatility, making it a solid choice for outdoor enthusiasts.

On the other hand, the Torres EVX K40 is a forward-thinking electric SUV equipped with a 73.4 kWh battery offering an impressive range of 287 miles (WLTP). The 207 PS motor matches the ICE version in torque at 260 Nm, while rapid charging from 10% to 80% takes just 37 minutes. Its quieter drivetrain and instant torque promise a refined driving experience that’s perfectly suited to city commutes and long-distance adventures.

Both SUVs carry the “Powered by Toughness” design philosophy, but the Torres ICE leans towards rugged charm while the Torres EVX embraces futuristic aesthetics:
• Torres ICE:
Its angular wheel arches, bold radiator grille, and 20-inch diamond-cut alloys project a classic SUV vibe. The intricate front grille draws inspiration from the Big Dipper, blending heritage with modern sophistication. The LED taillights and distinctive rear bump evoke an outdoor-ready, adventurous personality.
• Torres EVX:
The EVX pushes the envelope with horizontal LED daytime running lights, inspired by South Korean symbolism. Its integrated wide skid plate and futuristic dot-shaped DRLs ensure it turns heads on urban streets and rugged trails. The ‘X’ motif in its name symbolizes extreme versatility and off-road capabilities.

Step inside either model, and you’re greeted with a luxurious and tech-forward cabin:
• Shared Features:
Both SUVs come with premium leather seats, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster paired with a smart infotainment system. Connectivity is seamless with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto, complemented by Bluetooth and DAB radio.

• Torres ICE Enhancements:
For traditionalists, the physical controls are an appreciated touch. The K40 trim offers a power-adjustable, heated, and ventilated front and rear seat setup, ensuring comfort in all seasons.

• Torres EVX Innovations:
The EVX builds on this foundation with a floating centre console, ambient mood lighting, and 3D surround-view cameras for unparalleled parking assistance. The BYD lithium iron phosphate battery’s advanced thermal management ensures consistent cabin comfort regardless of external temperatures.

Both SUVs cater to families and adventure-seekers with their spacious interiors and ample cargo capacity:
• Torres ICE:
Offers 703 litres of boot space, which expands to 1,662 litres with the rear seats folded. Hidden compartments under the load floor add to its practicality.
• Torres EVX:
Mirrors these dimensions but introduces clever interior storage solutions like door pockets for 1.5-liter bottles, a glovebox for tablets, and even headrest hangers. Its flat load floor simplifies loading and unloading bulky items.

When it comes to safety, both SUVs excel with eight airbags and a suite of driver-assistance technologies:
• Torres ICE:
Includes Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), and Blind Spot Assist. Its trailer sway control enhances stability when towing.
• Torres EVX:
Takes safety further with Traffic Sign Recognition, Lane Change Collision Warning, and 3D surround-view monitoring. The EV drivetrain's low centre of gravity adds stability, and its Hill Descent Control ensures confidence on steep gradients.

Driving enthusiasts might favour the Torres ICE for its familiar handling and 6-speed automatic transmission. Its petrol engine provides steady acceleration, making it versatile for urban and off-road settings.

The Torres EVX, however, stands out with its instant electric torque and whisper-quiet cabin. Its shift-by-wire toggle switch replaces a traditional gear shifter, delivering a futuristic experience. With a range of 287 miles, it’s ideal for eco-conscious drivers looking to reduce their carbon footprint without sacrificing performance.

Both models come with robust warranties, but the EVX edges ahead with an industry-leading 10-year/1,000,000 km battery warranty:
• Torres ICE:
Backed by a 5-year/100,000-mile warranty and 12-month service intervals, it’s a reliable choice for traditionalists.
• Torres EVX:
Its longer battery warranty and minimal maintenance needs make it a cost-effective option for the long haul.

The Torres ICE K40 starts at £38,080, offering an affordable entry point for a well-equipped SUV. The Torres EVX K40, at £47,495, justifies its higher price with advanced EV technology, longer range, and lower running costs. For those prioritising long-term savings and environmental impact, the EVX is a compelling option.

The choice between the Torres ICE and Torres EVX ultimately comes down to your driving habits and priorities:
• Opt for the Torres ICE if you value traditional driving dynamics, towing versatility, and slightly lower upfront costs. Its rugged charm and comprehensive feature set make it a great all-rounder for families and adventurers alike.
• Choose the Torres EVX if you’re ready to embrace the electric revolution. Its cutting-edge design, exceptional range, and lower running costs make it a standout choice for the eco-conscious driver.

Both the Torres ICE and Torres EVX showcase KGM Motors' evolution into a global powerhouse blending tradition with innovation. Whether you’re looking for the dependability of petrol power or the future-focused capabilities of electric, the Torres line up delivers versatility, safety, and style in spades.

Thank you all, and enjoy!

Another car I don't know, not even sure if this model is on sale in Canada. As usual, very good presentation 👍
