RE: Help needed

in #cars8 years ago

Hello cutwitviky. As a tech who specializes on German cars myself, I can tell you that unfortunately, more info is needed. Are other lights illuminated on the instrument cluster, or other messages accompany this one? It is not uncommon to have the ABS, Brake, and/or Service Engine Soon illumnated as well... You have an issue in the drivetrain control, but it is not serious enough to put the vehicle into fail-safe. In failsafe, the vehicle will stay in second gear, and the transmission will not shift, so as to protect the vehicle. Your problem may progress to this, so do not put it aside. Many things can cause this. From a faulty wheel speed sensor, to even a bad alternator, or IBS battery cable. You can try and use a generic OBD2 scanner and see what faults are present, but you may find very limited information. Unfortunately, cars are protected by copyright infringement laws and manufacturers employ sneaky tricks to hide diagnostic data from you, unless you use an approved and licensed scantool. Those are usually expensive and only owned by professionals in the industry.

Something you can try if a generic scan does not work, is have it properly scanned by a repair shop with the proper equipment (does not have to be dealer) and have them provide you the printout of the scan results. You can then share on here for some guidance and direction before you settle on getting it fixed. Make sure they do a full system scan of the entire diagnostic network, and do not be perturbed if you get a lengthy list of codes. OBD systems are hypersensitive, and will register faults for the most minute issues, which may not even be current or serious. This is another sneaky tactic designed to fear monger you into spending a lot of $$$. Also be on the lookout for my Steemit (Cars Demystified) as I will be blogging about this and only this. I have been an independent technician now for over 6 years, and do only the Euro cars!
