Chronicles of Alan : Cars- Volkswagen Beetle's

After I got out of the Army, was more into Motorcycles .

I remember getting off the Street called the Highway in Florida( one block away from Sage street.), turning left , fast of course?, and hitting a patch of loose dirt and doing a somersault over the Bars ,

and the Car I landed just in front of was my Dad's!

He had a good talk with me , and felt that I should at least have a car as well!

Well he had a Beetle at Home with a badly damaged Motor 1961 Model with a 1200cc motor. Gave him R200.00 for it.

Did not take me long , I did the Motor up, put it back together , now to put it in?

I had 3 Sister's all attending the Florida Park High School half a Block up the Road, put out the word I needed some Help?

I am not sure how to put this modestly?, their Brother , played in a Rock Band, Had hair halfway down his back , and was considered a real catch by the opposite Sex!

After School about 10 Schoolgirls rock up to help put my motor back! Am I too proud?, not a chance, about 6 of them pick up the back of the Car, while I roll under with the motor on my chest , lift it, and slot it in! 20 minutes later the car is running.

Strangely enough while doing sound at a Bike rally a couple of years back ,met a Guy who informed me that his Mother still spoke about helping me put a Motor in, and what a big crush she had on me at the time!

Anyhow, I had about 3 x 250cc Bikes at that time , so the devastating Power of a 1200cc Beetle soon wore off!

I found an abandoned wrecked VW 1300 , front end crash, lying in Marshal Street , as it was still there a month later, I was sure they had actually left it for me!, So I , of course , towed it home . My intention was naturally to prevent it being a Road Hazard, What a selfless person I am!

As I cannot leave anything alone, stripped the Motor ( threw the Body away) Ported it , Drilled extra holes in the Crankshaft Big end bearings (flowed more oil to enable higher Revs)Put a smaller Drive Belt pulley on the Crankshaft , to slow down the fan ( less power to drive it) Built my own inlet Manifold for a Double Choke Weber Carb and also made a 4 into 1 exhaust system for it.

Put it in, certainly went quite a bit better , but the truly amazing bit was at under 80MPH it would deliver 50MPG!

Beetles were never known for economy!

Just to make sure, I went to the Police with the engine number saying" Some Guy's offered to sell me a Beetle engine cheaply, this is the engine number"

Result, straight into an interrogation room, All those words starting with W , Where, When, Who , What, etc, Promised to call them as soon as they got back to me !

Needless to say , 1200 in again, Look for another Crankcase , Rebuilt all the innards into a 1600 Crankcase I bought ( with Papers)

Let that be a lesson to all of you, Crime does not pay! Or more correctly Crime can cost you a lot, both in time and money!

As only intellectuals are on Steemit, you will have gathered that this story is not complete, and this was just the start of some very interesting , and Quick Beetles that I built , I quote:-

" If it is not fast, what purpose does it serve?"

Yah you sound like a legend and it is evident here on steemit because of the mamoth followers that follow your post. 😁😁

I've always loved the classic VW since I was made to drive a Ford instead of the little orange SuperBeetle I wanted in my late teens.
Thanks for sharing!
Peace.

wow excellent post dear friend.

I went through a period of repairing and selling cars until I got a call from the DMV asking if I had a dealer's license. That was the end of my brief career. The mechanic who certified my cars was the most bothered - he'd be out a lot of money

That is definitely the basis for a story?

AWESOME videos!!!

army man driffting damn it must be amazing hahaha :D

Great lesson : Crime does not pay! Or more correctly Crime can cost you a lot, both in time and money! <3

One of my favorite car.

Mine Too!

The great "superbug"

Great story, i like Beetle, car with a character!

Thank You.

This is the present manual for the mechanic, perfectly thought up @awgbibb

Thank you.

Cars are see little but its engine very powerful and parfect

The engine is of the Porsche type 911

911's are 6 cylinders , and a Porsche Engine is very different to a Beetle's?, other than they are both Air-cooled.

Beetles can be fast. I drive a 05 slk350 (not that fast but still 0-60 in 5,4s) and I raced one beetle that looked suspiciously moded aaaaaaaand I got smoked.
After that I spoke with the guy in the beatle and it did push about 300hp with a 2.0l audi engine. First I've heard about an audi engine in a beetle and maybe the last :D
So don't underestemate them!

I put some interesting Motors in them Myself , as you will see!

Very good post, nice story.vote.

Thank You.

Great story! The Beetle always intrigued me. The arch design was for structural rigidity. Thank you for sharing.

Many years ago a bunch of us chipped in and got an old bug for a friend. He had a blast restoring it and takes it to shows. It was great to be a part of something nice.

They have a lot of character!

Thank you, he is a great guy, he always worked hard and wanted a bug for many years. I don't know what year it is. It brings me much joy when I see him driving it around town with the top down. He is so passionate about that car and gets a lot of enjoyment from it. One can gain a lot by giving even in the smallest of ways.

HI, really nice post, I need some of your time and your help, I'm #theshootingstar and I need a big one in steemit as support, for more information Clic here!

Unfortunately ,passed on years ago.

I'm so sorry

Great story and love the way you got the engine fitted. Long hair sure attracted them.
Luckily I attracted @michelle.gent (she posted a pic of me today when I was a catch). :) Even more lucky is she loves bikes and cars also.

That is one of a kind
Nicely Built buddy

Thank You

I love beetles, and currently still own a 1968 fastback!!
I don't think the one in your video is the fastest, if you google you get some amazing fast beetles, but quite a number of them don't have air-cooled engines in anymore.

I have seen some seriously Quick air-cooled ones! Thank You for stopping by!

nice post..learnt something..my father is a old car lover.i will definitely show this to him :) thanks for sharing

My Pleasure, Thanks.

Give him my Regards!

@awgbibb,
"Volkswagen Beetles" the great German product since WWII if I am not mistaken! Actually it is a dream car of mine as well! Yeah it needs a modification, then it might be a beast of all beasts :D

If it is not fast, what purpose does it serve?

Wise words indeed.

Still smiling at the thought of a Beetle getting 50 mpg's under 80 mph. That fan work and extra oil from drilling did the trick.

More likely the Weber DCD7 and Freeflow exhaust!

Wow man it's an amazing car! And great video:))

Big thumbs up!

Thank You.

Amazing story. Thank you man

Pleasure

Love your passion of cars

I have a 1302 beetle. First I was thinking of a type 4 engine but a street legal modification would be too expensive here in Austria. So I have to be fine with the infinitely acceleration of 44 hp :-)

At least the 1302 had front Disk Brakes! South Africa was one of the countries where they built beetles , but they never went off Drums! Only special imports had the disks.

I love the 1302 model. The best beetle in my opinion. better handling than old ones but still the classic feeling with the metal dashboard and the straight wind screen compared to the 1303 model :-)
What is your favorit model ?

fantastic post, really great car, thanks for sharing

Thank You.

That engine was so loud wow :D

Very much so! Thank You.

Not sure what this guy is trying to achieve?

Great post @awgbibb !
Love this line "If it is not fast, what purpose does it serve" !

Thank You.

Welcome !

Thats awesome!!!

Great video and beautiful car

I love that cars here in my country colombia we can see a lot of them making an excellent work most of times as loaders of fruits.

actually the Beetle could be a Porsche 😊or the other way around 😉at least at that period they made cars which you could prepare and maintain yourself. Wish I did keep that quality that high. Beetle up, and enjoy the ride.
