Canada Day (also know as Dominion Day) is celebrated because on July 1st, 1867 was the date that Canada officially became a Nation. At the time, it was still under British rule, but before was just seen as a colony (upper and lower Canada representing Ontario and Quebec), and on that date the British crown recognised Canada as its own country.
