Feature Request: Sorting comments by Author Reputation

in #busy7 years ago (edited)

After creating some trending posts I noticed the sheer amount of (useless) comments and how difficult it was, to find important comments.

And how nice it would be to sort those comments by the Author Reputation.

Now - a high author reputation isn't instantly equal to a high value response but the chance is high, that as the author of that post - I want to read and respond to it.

This feature-request goes out to both condenser and busy.

I would implement it myself but I'm not versed with REACT and sadly also don't have much time. But I'm pretty sure that there are a lot of people out there - who want this feature ASAP.

PS: Whoever implements it and pings/mentions me - will get an instant 100% up-vote by me.

Cool

very cool !

that would indeed be a nice feature, instead of having people giving a silly comment and upvoting themselves to show up on top and hope that others vote for them as well.
It is also true that there are less people with higher reps just writing "nice post, upvote me and I will follow you"
maybe adding a wordcount and setting it to a certain amount of words to filter out the rest? like anything with 10 words or less is automatically sorted down. (no idea if this would be possible though)

The main reason I want this feature is because a high reputation most of the time means that the user is already for quite a while part of the STEEM ECO-SYSTEM.

And I want to at least acknowledge the user for commenting under my post without having to scroll through 50 or 60 low value comments.

a high reputation most of the time means that the user is already for quite a while part of the STEEM ECO-SYSTEM.

Oftentimes, the high reputation is purchased by investing in STEEM; but, I'm sure you knew that.

I want to at least acknowledge the user for commenting under my post

Unfortunately, this would once again overshadow those just starting out who have something of VALUE to say. Of course, you know, too that their upvote wouldn't be worth much...a penny if you're lucky.

I hope the comments will continue as they flow out. Those who need the recognition just starting out don't need to be pushed even further into the depths of the ocean.

Peace.

Well thanks, @spiritualmatters. You just answered a question I've had, about how to increase my reputation score. And also why some people who don't seem to interact much in the steemit community had such high rep scores.

Glad to help; but, don't let the 'tortoise' approach for growing your reputation deter you.

There are a lot of whales, aka investors, on the platform whose energies are oftentimes used for growing the Steem platform. Others are merely members of the community for trading their investments for the best returns. This is part of what makes the Steem community a melting pot of all 'reasons' for being a member.

Of course, some grow their reps by "botting" their way up the ladder. This is often far more costly than meets the eye. As you study more, you will soon see that there are some people with high ranks and very little in their Wallet to show for it.

Even though this is an archived post, (of zero payout value ;+), I'm glad this conversation continues. Perhaps, this will inspire you to create an original post on the topic based on your perception.

Best regards!

Peace.

Thanks, @spiritualmatters. Really. I'm just trying to make sense of all the different aspects of steemit, and your thoughtful response is appreciated.

Since I'm here to write and interact, it may be the tortoise approach for me. But banana style.

the tortoise approach

That's 99% of us on the platform...quite rewarding in a strange kind of way to see pennies turn into dollars, literally. Whale or plankton, Steemit is a great hobby for people who love to blog/vlog. It runs circles around FB for the simple reason, it pays in tangible rewards, no matter how minute the amount.

Best regards!

Peace.

I will admit that I do tend to upvote my own post when I feel that what I write is substantial and I’d like some sort of feedback. It may be perceived as selfish or taking advantage of the system. But that is an option of the system which is in place for a reason, we must assume or accept. I wouldn’t want someone to notice me just to upvote me unless they actually read my post and actually believed it was valuable.

Thanks, very good post !!!!

Awesome Work!

Keep it up!!!

I've been using this Chrome extension and only until just now, when I made a comment on a recent post and wanted to see what my sorting options were, did I notice that I do have this feature available to me... I still want stackable sorting options though...

And now that I'm back at this post... I noticed that in your image above. It depicts what appears to be the busy.org platform with the sort by reputation option being available... is this true or is that photoshopped?

Reveal spoiler

cheers!

Another upside is this would be that if you still find spam comments of users with a higher reputation, it's much easier to notice them and give them the flag that they deserve.

A user with high reputation who still writes spam comments, shouldn't have a high reputation in the first place. Should help weed those people out.

Or sort by length of the comment. Then those " great post" comments will end on the bottom of the list. Once you've read the first one, you can stop reading 😀

I think it needs to be a combination. Both reputation and length of post. Because you cannot buy reputation. But you could just have fuller text. So it should be both or some type of correlation between the two. If post length was an option then spammers would just take advantage of that. I was thinking the same thing but it’s dificult. I’d say ultimately it might need to be a combination of trending (upvote), reputation and length. It’s a tricky problem with an even trickier potential solution.

Those things shouldn't be combined. The length of a comment says nothing about the quality.

Sorting like that would only encourage users to make even bigger spam comments.

Also - I would prefer a simple 1 word comment by @ned - saying: nice

Than a lengthy comment by a new user who is completely off-topic.

Agreed. The ability to sort it by length of post would be beneficial to certain users wishing to see if it may perhaps have some substance, since sorting by reputation might have otherwise brought a low reputation but substantial post to light. I like reputation idea holistically tho as it encourages users to more or less create content, which is hopefully good content. As opposed to simply buying into the system, literally.

Technically all reputation is "bought", if you spend enough time to think about how it's obtained. Well, bought or pre-mined, I guess.

Bought vs earned, to get a bit more technical. But I see where you’re coming from.

Hah. Such a simple but elegant solution. This might actually be nice lol. Would not hat thought about it.

bro,i m agree with you. Many people give negative comment without any reason.Never read full post. When i joined steemit, one person given me negative upvote and comment without any reason.

sis, this isnt about positive or negative, its about relevance

Sibling.

This is a great request, but I'd build ontop of this module. If you create the ability to sort by rep, you should also be able to pull other data types and provide additional ways to sort.

I'd like to see comments by people who follow you. Or perhaps, sort by activity (which threads has the most responses).

Ultimately if the module allows you to pull that data, you could theoretically sort by any metric. That could be upgraded at a future date. Great proposal.

A nice idea that I completely support!
Hope the right person will read it :)

This indeed is something what's slowly starting to become essential. I'm not getting many comments my self but i hate to see that alot of good comments get lost under comments which are clearly copy pasted or done by a bot. It won't solve the whole problem but it's something. Hope someone implements it soon..

What will happen if i make good comment and i have a poor reputation or i have just joined steemit, then this will hurt me.If you do that then you have to also find the good comments within the poor reputation also.Thia will help new comers like me.Your reply or upvote encourage us a lot.So can you find some other way to find good comments.Ialways try to follow your post.Thank's for such post.@resteemed

This feature won't stop people from looking at comments with lower reputation - but there is sadly too much spam and comments from users with high reputation often mean insightful insights.

I follow certain blogs and the number of people who just write,''upvoted and resteemed' amazes me. I mean what is the point.
Is ranking comments by author reputation really fair?
There are many of us minnows who put time and effort into most of our comments.
I am afraid I do not have any easy answers for you. Then again I am new to steemit and still learning how all this works.
When I was a teacher we used a marking scheme to rate comments that students made on each others work. Not that I am proposing such a thing for steemit. Even then marking comments is such a subjective thing and down to how you interpret the mark scheme.
Sorry I can't be more helpful at this moment.

so the author with high reputation will get noticed by the viewer??

Thank you for the suggestion, checkout https://busy.org @okc just implemented this feature!

I don't have many comments on my blog posts so I can't really complain but I can definitely see how this feature could be really great for the guys who have a big following and a lot of comments on their posts.

That's a very useful idea @therealwolf. If we can sort comments by reputation it would save authors lots of time. Of course the downside of it would be missing potentially great and insightful comments from commenters with low reputation. This is especially true if the post got lots of comments. Nonetheless having such options from the main sites and the condenser even if you don't actually use that option would be great. Hopefully they would consider it and actually implement such option. Thanks for the interesting read.

Upvoted to give this visibility and so it is seen as a popular request. And it technically shouldn't be such a difficult feature to implement, since the sort order feature is already there.

me too i second it and hope this post will looked at for further implementation. This is a pretty idea the way it seems to me. Am loving it already for the open minds and devotion

I totally agree with you.

@doriitamar maybe you know and can do this?

Lol my comments might start getting noticed more..

But please not as default because that would be unfair for users with few reputation :(
Maybe a system which recognizes comments without real/important content (like "Good post") would be better, if that's possible.

First, there must be some kind of AI that will sort if your post or comment has value or importance as this will really discriminate people by their answer and not by reputation. Each individual has unique reply to a post and it is not dependent of reputation though reputation can be used as a basis but in the end this will discourage people to post and reply their comments.

Maybe the least you can sort is typical reply to post like short messages, thanks you messages but even short messages has meaningful meaning that triggers or inspire more valueable posts.

How about sort post in relation to topics so you can get the most relevant comments and answer. This can be done by filter dialog/ button.

No - sorting happens through human AI.

I simply want a way to see which high reputation steemian has commented under my posts. :)

Mmh, while I do understand your viewpoint I don’t like the idea. But I don’t like the current situation neither. It took some time before I noticed that upvoted comment climb the ranks in posting.
Your idea, which is much better than no idea, would give me the feeling that my comment would be worth less based on my time in the steem-eco-system. It could created the idea that whales are dolphins are more valuable.
It is at the moment hard enough for newcomers to get noticed and this would make it even harder.
For me personally I would just like them in posting order. Which would make it easier to see if I did read them all or which are the unread ones.
So I don’t want to critize your idea, just want to give you an other perspective!

that could be a nice feature. great idea!

interesting post and guide. I just tried to translite my language to understand your writing form. I have not experienced in steemit and have not been good at making good and interesting comments. and I will try to learn to comment properly and correctly, sorry if my comments are wrong. thanks @therealwolf

@therealwolf that wud definatelly be an added advantages to the user, also it vwould be beteer there is an option to hide the low rating comments and can only view the comments of choice

True. Especially for successful articles this could be an incredibly valuable feature. In many cases one can ignore about 50% of the comments, because they are mainly spam or not content related - thus makes it difficult for users who actually want to engage in a discussion with the author or other users. Although reputation is not an insurance against spam, it might be a first step into the right direction.

Definitely worth a resteem! Done.

Thanks for this information, it really is very helpful!

Your suggestion is valuable today and will become a must when millions of new users will start to interact here.

Hey ! I'm selling my votes to smartsteem for a few days now but haven't received any payout ..

Hey - please ask any questions related to smartsteem in our discord: https://discord.gg/srHEUuk

I know understood exactly how it works, thanks for the info on discord ;)

but it will hurt users like me who just joined steemit and don't have a good reputation

Thank you dear, fantastics info. I lub Steemits . I follow you always and give you upvote four upvotes until end of lifetimes. Follow back to end of earth. We need more goats and Steemers dollar pay for much goat milk. No more squeezing horse balls. Lovely.

Splendid idea, especially useful for those who normally got 100+ comments.

That's the best Idea I heard steemit-wise. I hope it gets implemented

Totally agree. It's an annoying thing to see that after spending time and energy researching and creating a good post you get comments from as kissers who don't even bother reading the post saying things like, "wow, nice post", "I want more posts like this, please follow me". There was one that made me amused, was going through a trending post by @crytpogee in which he made intelligent analysis about religion and science. Then a dumb asskisser commented "you're beautiful".

Congratulations @therealwolf, this post is the sixth most rewarded post (based on pending payouts) in the last 12 hours written by a Hero account holder (accounts that hold between 10 and 100 Mega Vests). The total number of posts by Hero account holders during this period was 421 and the total pending payments to posts in this category was $8722.39. To see the full list of highest paid posts across all accounts categories, click here.

If you do not wish to receive these messages in future, please reply stop to this comment.

It's important that the comments aren't only spam, right? I know many users with a high reputation that only do spams on other people's blog. I am still a newbie, but I'm trying my best to do original content for example, or unique content, and good comments. After all we all are here to help one each other and to learn more. SO yeah it's a nice feature!

Keep the good work @therealwolf

Cheers,

@t-miles

A logical approach and appreciate.
I still have a question, a person who starts on steemit, so with a reputation of 25, may be penalized. The latter can give value to the platform by his work and comment. It would be a little penalized not to have experienced steemit before?
Do you change the voting time?
I have a publication that does not appear as voted (sent 4 hours ago).
Thank you

Hi. I know it's not the place. But send 1 sbd to smartsteem and I did not receive upvote.

Can we tell how many of this Steemit user on this platform able to have a good communicating skills and write a good comments my point is do we really have to see the way how they write their comments? I just got in here and I don't know much about it..looking forward to learn more about sorting comments feature...Thanks

Nice way to place @berniesanders at the bottom of every comment section out there :D

Yes. I agree with what you say bro @therealwolf. Quite a lot of steemians friends who commented negatively or positively without reading to finish whatever content is contained in the posts we make. Because based on my personal experience when I first got to know steemit, I already experienced this.

Best Regard @ airil280708

Hi. I liked your post, keep it up. I wish you good luck and have a good day, and of course you can also get a big jackpot :)

Congrats I saw this got accepted to busy and will be live soon.

I have my 4th commit to busy going through approval now. Also 1 to Utopian and one to Steemit.

I'm wondering if you can help me because I lost 6sbd to smartsteem because I didn't know Instagram style food pictures were frowned upon. :-)

Hello Therealwolf,
Interesting idea, but there are some very high ranking idiots out there... so that might not actually be productive! Perhaps a system that allows those that get many upvotes on their comments could rank higher as they have shown good conduct!

keep well :D

This is a good idea, as reputation can be grown without much steem. I also understand how new users with valid comments could be discouraged by the change.

How about a middle ground? Comments are ranked by upvote value (descending) first, then for equal upvote values they are sorted descending by reputation. However the reputation sort would be delayed by 8 hours, so new users will have 8 hours to make an impact and gain upvote before the reputation sort. Thoughts?

the problem I see here is that after months of excessive voting bot use, the reputations is not at all in relation to the post quality any more. Pretty useless feature nowadays, I fear.
