On March 21 worldwide, the World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated. In 2011, the General Assembly of the United Nations chose this day to positively visualize the condition and thus increase public awareness of the social and human value that every person with an intellectual disability possesses, according to Fundadown Venezuela.

On this day, it is recalled that the differences that make us equal, being vital recognition and respect, since disability is not an impediment to contribute to our societies. Therefore, every year the United Nations celebrates this day a conference at its headquarters in New York. The topic to be discussed this year is "What I contribute to my community" #WhatIBringToMyCommunity, that is, how people with Down syndrome make significant contributions throughout their lives to their community, be it from their family, work, culture, media of communication, recreation, leisure and sport. Contributions that we know exist within our Venezuelan society and that we only need to look around to recognize them.

Although the path is long to improve the quality of life of the person with Down syndrome, which includes not only health but independence, autonomy, integration and knowledge by most citizens, especially in the context in which we live, we will not stop working for it. There is the meaning of a day like today, where it is not only a celebration but a reminder of how much we as a society still have to do.

• This date (month 3, day 21) was chosen because it reminds us that the condition occurs due to a genetic accident known as Trisomy of par 21.

• For several years the use of different socks or stockings has been extended during this day as a symbol to sow awareness, recognition and appreciation towards differences. Being the stockings the chosen garment because it visually reminds us of the chromosomes, curious, is not it?
