DTube Business: Being A Boss Sucks [A Short Story About Having To "Fire" Someone]

in #business7 years ago

Hey guys!

So as many of you know I run a non-profit that I oversee and direct.

Most of the time it is fun.

Sometimes it just downright sucks though, especially when I have to make difficult choices, and make decisions that benefit the non-profit as opposed to just an individual or a friend.

Today I share with you my little anecdote about having to "fire" someone for the first time, and the absolute turmoil it caused me!

Hope this resonates with someone!

Thanks for watching!

xx~Beth

Hi @Bethwheatcraft. This was a great video and I can surely relate to your position. I am an IT Director at a health Insurance company and currently have 20 direct reports. I encourage everyone in the group to have fun, get along and have a great teamwork type atmosphere. Unfortunately times arise that make you have to remind everyone that this IS A BUSINESS and you all have a job to do. I recently had to let someone go and it is a "shitty" feeling for sure. It isn't fair to the rest of the team if they are pulling their weight and go above and beyond on a consistent basis. In the case I am speaking about the former employee could not come in to work on time to relieve other teammates. So they would need to stay longer and cover every time this happened. I put this person on what we call a 30 day PIP (Performance Evaluation). In that time they need to get their act together or it goes to HR and Final, then termination. Anyway it went to termination. It upset the rest of the team because everyone likes this individual but I explained that we have a job to do here and we cannot drop the ball. I also explained that I hated doing it and it is the "WORST" part of my job but it is also one of my job functions as well. I feel for you @Bethwheatcraft. It is a hard thing to do. Especially if the person is a friend but it is very necessary. I am glad you were able to stand up to the challenge and do what's best for your group. That's shows me that you are a great leader/manager. You had a tough decision to make and made the one that benefits the group as a whole.

Being a boss can definitely suck. I’ve been in a similar situation a few times and it never gets easier.

What employees often don’t recognise is that you’ve pumped so much time and money into your business, so the business becomes your baby. And you need to protect that baby from people who don’t take it seriously or put it in danger.

Leaders get all the praise when things go well and all the blame when things go wrong. Hard to handle both sometimes.

Yeah, I haven't gotten much praise yet, but maybe after our first performance hahaha!

I believe its such because to actually please humans while being a boss is really difficult too, there's just lots of decisions to make

Important Safety Tips for the workplace

Not everyone understands that for you rewards, which may be few and far in between, you have to absorb all the risk in the end.

I was a "boss" for a few years. I finally left my last management position 5 years ago and have never looked back. That doesn't mean I have stopped being a leader, but management is just too much of a time suck and ass pain. The pay usually doesn't make the juice worth the squeeze.
