I will write few posts dedicated to online freelancing as and when I feel I want to write about it. You might wonder why I am writing about Online Freelancing?? Well, that is my job. My company, Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) is responsible for driving the digital economy in Malaysia. One of the components in the digital economy is GIG ECONOMY.
My responsibility in the Gig economy are:
To create awareness and educate the industries in Malaysia on the Future of Work and Gig Economy.
To assist and facilitate large corporations in Malaysia in implementing online freelancing.
To recommend strategies and policies that can be used by corporations to address their pain point in adopting online freelancing.
I will not write from the perspective of freelancers because I am not a full-fledged freelancer. Furthermore, I believe there are numbers of Steemians are doing online freelancers and very good at it such as @deborism. I believe she put a better story in regards to the freelancing or the digital nomad trend. Let's face it, most bosses have a negative perception of outsourcing jobs to freelancers. Some think that this is new and taboo without even realising that even Fortune 500 companies are starting to adopt platform outsourcing to freelancers. I am writing this post and will continue to write more on this topic to showcase how successful companies using freelancers to create a competitive advantage.
An extensive variety of platforms these days like Upwork, Freelancer, People Per Hour etc, empower organizations to outsource their job specifically starting with freelancers on an on-demand basis. Anyhow, little may be known something like how and what is more the reason organizations would making utilization of freelancer platforms.
There are three dissimilar motivations for business working with freelancer marketplace platform.
It gives straight-forward entry to a scalable workforce, skills, experience and expertise
It reduces labour and hiring costs;
It dispenses with routine hiring obstructions.
Compared to traditional staffing agencies, businesses experience those contracting agility of freelancer coupled with fast work output delivery and when freelancers meet their critical measurements of quality, it instantly creates a value that generates constant demand for these platforms.
Likewise businesses choose to engage freelancers and the platforms, they need to prepare for the challenges which might include: Taking in new hones on adjusting internal work and external work; keeping in-tact the communication costs; Facing inner resistance from the organisations and stakeholders; creating tailor-made answers to address doubts; and making new socio-technical system and infrastructures to support freelancer platform outsourcing.
Key steps that businesses need to adopt freelancer platform transformation including:
- To work out on a pilot project with the platform.
- Fiscal resources allocation.
- Getting buy-in from stakeholders and C-levels within the organisation.
Key Steps before implement Freelance marketplace outsourcing:
- Come up with what work or task to be outsourced to the platform.
- Setup a Freelancer Management System
- Fostering relationships with the freelancers that can eventually lead to your community talent pool.
In the long run, a sustainable ecosystem comprised of business, talent marketplace platform and freelancer will be created. Online freelancing is becoming an alternative employment for skilled workers and could drive organisation to tap into this talent pool for the reliability and sustainability
This is just a summary. In my next post, I will focus more on writing about:
- the challenges in adopting online freelancing -
- the potential benefits of leveraging external talent pool.
- Ways of successful adoption of online freelancing.

Everything has it's advantages and disadvantages. I believe freelancing is the way to go because it brings a lot of benefits to a company. The quality of freelancer is always the major concerned. We worked with few freelancers before but most of them lacking the sense of responsibility, i think because they think that they doesn't need to maintain whatever they have developed.
Yes, quality is always a huge question mark when it comes to working with 'stranger' freelancers for the first few times.. However one huge advantage that freelancers bring to the table is the experience that they have in working with different clients. Compared to in-house staffs, freelancers get to 'try' more and different ideas because every client seeks differently. This creates a unique perspective due to their widened horizon in working experience.
Awesome write up! I love the way you put it, I gonna implement this soon
An insightful post which set different perspective about freelancing. I always believe this would be a big trend like it or not, be it individual or business owner
It is only the matter of meeting each other needs. Location based work is no longer the only option, and we need to set the right expectation to ride along with the wave.
True. it is time for business to future-proof their process in term of talent acquisation.
Most businesses especially SME still did not smell the changes. They are still operating the old fashioned way. They just don't realize this could be one of the factor to manage the business cost in a more effective way. People cost could kill the company if it is not looking into seriously. Not many companies are willing to pay a good price to retain a valuable employee. If this is the case, why not engage a good freelancer to do the work?
@originalworks
I think freelancers are more responsible now. However, any company wished to hire one need to do their own background checkup.
Thank you for sharing.
Cheers.
