Testing my Clay

In my previous post, I had been saying something about buying this air dry clay in Officeworks and would like to know what else can I make.

I also remembered a stage in my life as a little girl when I started using clay in my work: I very much wanted to learn how to sculpt even a simple doll but, I do not know how or where to start. No one had ever told me that I do not need to get into finer details to make a doll.

So this is a tribute/ tutorial to all the little girls out there who wanted to learn how to sculpt or just make their very own doll.

I did not include a lot of details/ complicated things to do. Its basically just shape/ draw thing.

To start with, I used toothpicks as re inforcements. Wires can also be used- I don't know what that specialized wire is called but, if you are making a waterbased/ air dry clay sculptures, its usually the rule of the thumb to use something that would not rust. For me, I just used toothpick because:

• I am not selling my work
• It's very accessible, affordable
• Almost all the places I had been have toothpicks stashed somewhere

I just filled in the " legs" with flesh coloured clay.

So this is how I attached the legs to the body.

Then attached a lump of clay to make the neck( there's also toothpick reinforcement for the head and neck).

If anyone of you are interested to know, when one part of the body is bigger than the other parts( for example you are making chibi dolls - heads are much, much, much bigger than the body), it usually very reasonable to use reinforcements to ensure that the sculpture will be strong and retain its shape.

I used my clay tool to create holes and a bit of a lump of a clay to make the nose.

I drew in the final details and you'll have something that looks like this.

I used my glitter glue- yes, those glue that you buy at the grocery/ craft store/ craft or school supplies store to get this effect. The pinkish tints are just from markers. For something that looks like its been created for playing, it retains the colour remarkably.
