The Karma Kagyu lineage is one of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism and focuses on the practice of meditation and the realization of the nature of mind. The history of the lineage dates back to the 10th century in India where the great master Tilopa lived who transmitted the teachings to Marpa who brought the teachings of the Kagyu lineage from India to Tibet. For this reason, Marpa is also known as the great translator, in Tibet he taught Milarepa, one of the great teachers of Tibetan Buddhism, who in turn transmitted the teachings to Gampopa, a monk who became his disciple and who founded the Karma school. The main line of the school is that of the Karmapa (means the one who performs the activity that benefits all beings), and the second is the Shamarpa (means Bearer of the Red Crown). The first Karmapa Dusum Khyenpa (1110-1193) was a disciple of Gampopa (1079-1153). His reincarnation, the second Karmapa Karma Pakshi (1204-1283), was the first recognized reincarnated lama of Tibet. The first Shamarpa, Khendrup Drakya Senge, was the chief disciple of the third Karmapa, Rangjung Dorje, who presented him with a ruby red crown.

The Karmapa is considered one of the main spiritual authorities of Tibetan Buddhism and has been recognized by the lamas of the other schools of Tibetan Buddhism. Currently the 17th Karmapa, Thaye Dorje lives in exile between India and France, while another claimant to the title, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, lives in exile in the United States.
