Bunnies and Balloons / Conejos y Globos

The other day I was making oatmeal when suddenly I heard a loud, low noise, somewhere between a rumble and a hiss. It kept starting and then stopping again. I said to two year old Grant, “What in the world is that?” And I went outside to look. I saw this hot air balloon floating down my street, so low it seemed it could hit the trees. I started shouting to tell my husband Nathan, who was still asleep. It was so cool. A few days later I was breastfeeding 7 month old Ros and heard the same noise. Once I was done feeding him I came out and saw more balloons coming from a different direction. They were farther away so less impressive, but I cannot help but think because of how long the noise had continued that there may have been a lot more floating by before I made it out.

I have always wanted to ride in a hot air balloon. They are just so interesting. People were flying in hot air balloons long before they invented airplanes. And the only thing holding them up is hot air. I had seen pictures of them in advertisements for our town, but I did not expect to see one floating down my street!

In other news, we have bought some cute little bunnies. Nathan wants to raise them for meat. The three chinchilla rabbits that we have so far are going to be our breeding bunnies, so we can make pets out of them. We named the male Oscar. He is two toned. The girls are more traditional chinchilla colors. The darker one is named Cassadane, or Cassy for short. She is named after the wife of Cyrus the Great of the Persian Empire. The lighter one is probably going to be called Joanna, though there is still some debate over that.

The guy we bought the rabbits from had a very interesting little farm. He gave us a tour when we picked them up. He had deer in cages, which I don’t think I have ever seen before. There was also a steam house which I believe they originally used for making tequila, and now use for people. They have a giant outdoor stone structure for hanging up cloth for shade. That has statues of women on several of the pillars.

We actually got 6 rabbits because one of our Mexican friends had asked us to pick some up for him too. We started out putting their cages on the ground in the front yard. Then Stephanie, our friend who is staying with us for a month, showed Grant how to feed them lettuce, which he called, “salad.”

We are trying to train them to be more comfortable with being held, and we have also let them out to stretch their legs a few times. None of them have gotten through the hedge yet.

Nathan now has built a frame to set their cages on with a tarp underneath to catch waste and a tarp above for shade. He has built a sleeping box for them. One reason we had to get them up off the ground is neighborhood cats kept coming into our yard to terrorize them. The frame is a very noticeable feature in our backyard now. The other day we were visiting some of our neighbors and when they asked where we lived I was happy I could just point out the big blue tarp.

I was really glad to meet that family and invite them over to see our bunnies. They have a little boy around 18 months that Grant enjoyed playing with. The mom is Belgium and the dad I believe is Mexican. They have been living in hong Kong for work. They are trying to raise their son Tri-lingual, and I was happy that when Grant talked to him in English he seemed to understand. Unfortunately they were only temporary neighbors, renting the house across the park for a week. We will have to keep looking for more long terms Friends for Grant.

El otro día estaba haciendo avena cuando de repente oí un ruido fuerte y bajo, en algún lugar entre un ruido sordo y un siseo. Siguió comenzando y luego se detuvo de nuevo. Le dije a Grant, de dos años: "¿Qué demonios es eso?" Y salí a mirar. Vi este globo de aire caliente flotando en mi calle, tan bajo que parecía que podría golpear los árboles. Empecé a gritar para decirle a mi esposo Nathan, que todavía estaba dormido. Fue tan genial. Unos días más tarde estaba amamantando Ros de 7 meses y escuché el mismo ruido. Una vez que terminé de alimentarlo, salí y vi más globos que venían de una dirección diferente. Estaban más lejos, eran menos impresionantes, pero no puedo evitar pensar, debido a cuánto tiempo ha continuado el ruido, que puede haber habido mucho más flotando antes de llegar a la conclusión.

Siempre he querido viajar en un globo de aire caliente. Ellos son tan interesantes. La gente volaba en globos aerostáticos mucho antes de que inventaran aviones. Y lo único que los detiene es el aire caliente. Había visto fotos de ellos en los anuncios de nuestra ciudad, ¡pero no esperaba ver uno flotando en mi calle!

En otras noticias, hemos comprado lindos conejitos. Nathan quiere criarlos para la carne. Los tres conejos de chinchilla que tenemos ahora van a ser nuestros conejitos de cría, por lo que podemos convertirlos en mascotas. Llamamos al Oscar masculino. Él tiene dos tonos. Las chicas son colores de chinchilla más tradicionales. El más oscuro se llama Cassadane, o Cassy para abreviar. Ella lleva el nombre de la esposa de Ciro el Grande del Imperio Persa. El más ligero probablemente se llamará Joanna, aunque todavía hay cierto debate sobre eso.

El hombre de que compramos los conejos tenía una pequeña granja muy interesante. Nos dio un recorrido cuando los recogimos. Tenía ciervos en las jaulas, que no creo haber visto antes. También había una casa de vapor que creo que originalmente se usaba para hacer tequila, y ahora se usa para la gente. Tienen una estructura de piedra gigante al aire libre para colgar el paño de la sombra. Eso tiene estatuas de mujeres en varios de los pilares.

De hecho, conseguimos 6 conejos porque uno de nuestros amigos mexicanos nos había pedido que recogáramos algo para él también. Empezamos colocando sus jaulas en el suelo en el patio delantero. Luego Stephanie, nuestra amiga que se queda con nosotros un mes, le mostró a Grant cómo alimentarlos con lechuga, a la que llamó "salad,” que significa “ensalada.”

Estamos tratando de entrenarlos para que se sientan más cómodos con estar sostenido, y también les hemos permitido estirar las piernas un par de veces. Ninguno de ellos ha superado el seto todavía. Nathan ahora ha construido un marco para colocar sus jaulas con una lona debajo para recoger los desperdicios y una lona encima para protegerse de la sombra. Él ha construido una caja de dormir para ellos. Una razón por la que tuvimos que levantarlos del suelo es que los gatos del vecindario siguen llegando a nuestro patio para aterrorizarlos. El marco es una característica muy notable en nuestro patio trasero ahora. El otro día visitamos a algunos de nuestros vecinos y cuando nos preguntaron dónde vivíamos me alegré de poder señalar la gran lona azul.

Estaba realmente contento de conocer a esa familia e invitarlos a ver a nuestros conejitos. Tienen un niño pequeño de unos 18 meses con el que Grant disfrutaba jugar. La madre es Bélgica y el papá creo que es mexicano. Ellos han estado viviendo en Hong Kong por trabajo. Están tratando de criar a su hijo Tri-lingual, y me alegré de que cuando Grant habló con él en inglés, él pareció entender. Lamentablemente, fueron vecinos temporales y alquilaron la casa en el parque durante una semana. Tendremos que seguir buscando términos más largos amigos para Grant.
