Breastfeeding: benefits through the years

in #breastfeeding7 years ago

We are coming up to 2 full years of breastfeeding and with that has come some questions from friends and family about how long we are going to continue to breastfeed and if I think continuing is best for Kai and our relationship. I guess a lot of people are confused and don't really know anything about extended or full term breastfeeding so I get the lovely opportunity to help them learn about it. Yay. Give the babies all the milk! All this breastfeeding talk of course got me thinking and I realized if my family and friends don't know about it then a lot of people probably also don't know about it. So Let's talk boobie.

First I'll start by explaining what full term or extended breastfeeding even means! It simply is allowing a child to self wean when they are ready. This usually happens anywhere between 6months and 7years. And contrary to what many people think breastmilk never stops being beneficial. Breast milk is literally good for EVERYONE! Someone, somewhere I can't remember, once compared it to spinach in that no matter how old or how many servings you have had it's still good and beneficial for you. Mind literally blown right!? Well let me bow your mind a bit more.

I've heard people say that children have no need for breastmilk past infancy or things like if they can ask for it then they are too old for it but why!? Breast milk literally changes day to day as our child's needs change and it helps boost brain development! As they grow older and their nutritional needs change, or when they get sick, once again so does our breastmilk leaving them with the perfect tailor made formula making sure they have everything their little bodies needs. It's a crucial time for our little ones to get every nutrient and mineral as they are in rapid growth and development and nursing provides just that along with many other things like added stability during this sometimes challenging time so why not use our mommy super power to the best of our ability. Let's go back to breastmilk changing for a second. This happens because when our children latch on their saliva goes into our milk ducts and tells our body just what their little body needs. Very cool if you ask me!

Breastfeeding is a valuable source of disease protection. It is abundant in antibodies and is incredibly nutrient dense. So not only will it help boost our children's immune system and prevent getting sick but when a sickness does sneak in it will help them fight it off quickly! Something else I think many mamas know and I have experienced many times is that when our children get sick they have a tendency to refuse food leaving us, or at least me concerned he might not be getting everything he needs but thankfully even though he refuses all food he, like most other babies will eagerly accept a boob. And as we have already discussed they get EVERYTHING they need through breastmilk. Studies have shown that breastfeeding toddlers tend to be healthier than their non breastfed friends.

Growing up is hard. There are growing pains and bumps and bruises and just plain old frustrations as they work to learn how to navigate through this world. Stopping and snuggling and giving them a good nursing session can not only be soothing to them through these sometimes rough moments but can also help you two connect and maintain a strong bond. Along with all these benefits some studies have shown that meeting a child's dependency needs through breastfeeding in these early days and allowing them to wean in their own time helps them grow into more secure independent people.

All these reasons and more are why I breastfeed my sweet Kai through all our struggles and challenges and will continue till we either no longer can or until he no longer wants to. I think I've gone on long enough so bye for now! Thanx for stopping by and talking boob juice with me! Lots of love!

So many great benefits! Thanks for sharing, this was such an informative post.

So happy to hear you enjoyed my post! Lots of love to you! Thanx for your support and encouragement!

wow.. mind-blown indeed..

I always support breast feeding and assumed it was the way to go, but had no idea how magical it really is.

Makes sense.

It's like they have what they need, and make a decision.. rather than they didn't get and are always wanting

Giving kids everything they need is really the way for them to be secure independent adults (tragically, people sometimes think the opposite)

So happy for your beautiful family, and thanks for writing this, loved it.

Thank you so so much! I appreciate all the support more than you know! And yes it really is tragic isn't it!? I say free the nipple and give them all the boob juice! Lol! Sending you buckets of love your way! 😘

Lets be honest. I dont have kids and I dont know too much about kids, but I think so many people would love breastfeed longer (because clearly the benefits are good, we all know that), but for most people is does not seem workable with working life.

So what I see with my colleagues from the hospitals here is the breastfeed, come back to work after an X-amount of weeks. The use the pump during work (it has a fancy name, I dont really know this hihi) to get the daytime milk and that is okay.

After an X amount of time bosses will start to complain that employee is so busy doing woman stuff and if this can not be changed. Woman feels offended but also realizes her job is valuable is stops.

Welcome to the European lifestyle ;)))
Be happy you guys have the freedom to choose all these things!

Well.. we all have the freedom to choose right?

Yeah thats why its cool you guys have this choice!

So many people are forced into these kinds of choice for the wrong reasons, that quite often would not be 100% their own but infuenced by outside reasons

Thanx stopping by and sharing your thoughts on the matter. I think all parents are simply doing their best for their children. 😊

This is so beautiful @iamjamie. Thank you for being such a power mama! Haven't entered motherhood yet but I might, someday. Breastfeeding not only enhances the immunity/brain of your child but it creates a lovely bond between the mother and the babies. Thanks for an insightful blog on why this is important. Many things were new for me as well. :)

And Kai is so cute. Is this also because of the boobjuice? ;) Hehe! I guess it's genes as well. :P

So glad you enjoyed it! I'm sure whenever your day into motherhood happens you are going to rock it! Thanx fir all the love and I too think he's pretty darn cute! Hehehehe!

yeah for breastfeeding, I have breastfed all of mine, my eldest two both for over 3 years each and now my youngest is just 1 year old so she is definitely still being breastfed. This is why we have breasts, in the first place and breastfeeding is the best thing we can do for our children. I understand that for some it does not work out, but it really should be promoted and accepted more. Any soreness or blocked nose or infection that the kids have I always have treated with breast milk, it is amazing.

Aaaaaaaah! Me too! I use it for most everything and always keep back up stashes in the feeder for baths! Love hearing I'm not the only one! I also think it should be promoted more! From talking to people back in the states it seems a lot of people don't even know that for starters it's not even comparable to formula! Yikes! So here I am doing my best to spread a little awareness. 😍

keep spreading that awareness it is great, we need much more xx

Beautiful post, Jamie. Yes, I nursed my little girl for 2 years and 3 months before my health necessitated weaning - I looked like a stick insect and unwell while Ploi was wonderfully chubby. It IS a most amazing process and such a gift to give your child. A very important post. Brava!!

Thanx so much! And good for you! Breastfeeding is so not easy but like you said it's such a gift to our children. We all are always doing our best right!? Lots of love to you and your not so little baby Ploi 😘

Love it! And mind IS blown! Not about all the benefits, I knew there were so, so many, and absolutely plan to be an extended breastfeeding mother one day. But I'm blown away about the fact the children's saliva goes into the milk duct to tell your body what type of milky goodness to produce!! Wow! Our bodies are truly extraordinary. Thanks for the awesome post. So informative and lovely.

Awwwww! Thanx so much for your lovely comment! I am so happy to hear that when your day comes you are going to give your child the gift of fresh boob juice! 😍
