5 Steps to Reveal your Personal USP

in #branding7 years ago (edited)

What is a USP?

UPS = Unique Selling Proposition
It is a frequently used marketing term, used to describe the feature that makes a product, service, business or person different.
Your USP will take the place of your personal statement, and its message should be short and precise, focused on who you are and what you offer.

Now, let’s do it together. Get cozy, bring a hot drink, grab a piece of paper and a pen and let’s start!

Don’t delay! You got this! Take action now!
I know it’s challenging, but I have a special gift for you… do it together with me now, and I will send you personal feedback. Let’s create the best UPS ever!
Ready?

1 Identifying Your USP

“Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.”

What are your skills, knowledge or experience that you can offer, but others can’t?
Write down a list of:
All of your skills. What are you good at?
Your knowledge. Courses and training you’ve taken.
Your entire experience. List all your jobs, including part-time and voluntary positions.
Now, take a step back and try to see the big pictures, look at the list you’ve created.
What do you see? What skills, experiences, and knowledge pop out?
Which ones are unique to you?
If you can’t find a single thing that points out, perhaps you can find a unique combination of elements?

2 Explain the Problem You Solve
What value will you bring on?
What will your return on investment be?
How are you worth the time, hassle and money?
What products or services are you selling?

3 Make a Promise
A big part of a successful Unique Selling Proposition is pledging your audience.
This step combines the essential elements of the previous steps into a concise statement that embodies the value you have to offer.

List 5 of the most significant benefits a client receives from choosing to work with you. Try to find something that they could not get from someone else. Always think from the clients’ perspective. The benefits should explain why your services are essential to them and why they would choose you over another person.
Provide facts and figures or social proof.

4 Show Some Personality
Add a touch of personality! What makes your heart sing?
Your mission should be clear to you and to everyone else who comes into contact with you and your brand.

5 Keep it Short and Sweet
Think of your USP as a personal headline.
Just sum up how perfect you are for your clients.
I recommend two max three sentences (spoken and written).
Be honest!
Keep your message clear and consistent.

Awesome! Great job! By now you should have a nice draft of your USP, right? 😉
Woohoo! The hard part is done.

Next, take a few minutes (if necessary) and create the final version. When done, please share it with me in the comments below.
