This will be a quick intro post about a new book that I am reading by Dr. Mike Dow called, The Brain Fog Fix. Enjoy...
In today's society, we are not giving our brains the support they need to produce the essential brain chemicals to keep us energized, calm, focused, and inspired. The inevitable result of this chronically imbalanced brain chemistry is cognitive and mood problems. Our brains don't get what they are required to maintain high levels of the feel-good brain chemicals serotonin and dopamine, and low levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Instead, we haze, daze, and wire our brains with caffeine, sugar, starches, electronics, distractions, and unnecessary stress. And then we rely on short-term Band-Aids like excessive caffeine, antidepressants, sleep aids, and social isolation that ultimately exacerbate our problems.
The way we eat, sleep, work, and live is flooding, staving, clogging, and disrupting our brains by destabilizing the levels of three crucial brain chemicals: serotonin, dopamine, and cortisol. We experience these biological problems as brain fog, scatterbrain, memory loss, fatigue, anxiety, and the blues. Over time they turn into chronic insomnia, significant depression, persistent anxiety, and potentially dementia.
Keeping our blood sugar low is not only good for weight loss, it also makes the brain work faster and prevents brain fog. Meditation or prayer isn't just for monks or for people who want to find God, it also improves memory, mood, and attention span. Depression is not only about low serotonin or dopamine that can be corrected only with prescription medication, it is also about our brains needing more anti-inflammatory foods and experiences that promote neurogenesis, or the growth of new brain cells, and connections. What is good for the body is also good for the brain and soul as well.
Instead of steering our lives toward simple diet and lifestyle changes, healing spiritual practices, and human connections that actually support our brain health, we are taught to rely on drugs, which tend to disrupt our brain chemistry even further. A natural approach drawing on nutrition, exercise, sleep, meditation, and lifestyle are much more effective methods at allowing yourself to think and feel your best. This will lead to normal levels of serotonin, dopamine, and cortisol to help rebalance your brain chemistry and tap into your inner reserves of power, joy, and purpose.
Well there you have it for now...a quick intro this book. It is a great read and I recommend that you pick up a copy for yourself. Be on the lookout for more breakdowns on future chapters. Thanks for stopping by.
