Large Basalt Boulder for #bouldersunday

in #bouldersunday8 months ago (edited)

It's been a while since I've posted up a boulder for #bouldersunday so I have a doozy For ya today.

My oldest is in town from college this weekend so we decided to go for a hike this morning. We settled on the Starvation Ridge Loop trail in the Columbia River Gorge.

We had about a half hour drive to the spot and we started down the main trail. Our turn to go up the trail and around the loop was .2 from the parking area, but when we got to the trailhead the trail was closed due to a slide.

This area was part of the Eagle Creek fire in 2017. Most the trails are opened back up but they do close on occasion, as we found out.

We continued down the Starvation Creek trail for a while, but it is directly next to Interstate 84 so we decided to turn tail and head home. But not before we came upon this #boulder

This basalt boulder was huge. It's hard to see in the picture so let's go around the other side to get some perspective...

It's just kind of out there by itself.

are you a geologist?

Not professionally ;)
I love geology though and my two best friends are geologists :D
I found this Eosalmo fossil a few years back, the one in the picture.

Glad you’ve had some kiddo company over the long weekend. 🩷

Yeah thanks! It was kind of a last minute idea so a nice surprise for me :D

Great rock! ⛰️#bouldersunday, definitely a concept/prompt I didn't know yet.

Definitely an underused tag ;)
!PIMPOh yeah, #bouldersunday has been around quite a while thanks to @shasta.

I have no rocks / boulders in my (wide) neighborhood but should think about it to take pictures when I go on holidays to the mountains! :D

Well, boulders can be small as well. At least according to Wikipedia:

In geology, a boulder is a rock fragment with size greater than 25.6 cm (10.1 in) in diameter.

;)

That's still to be able to find it here 😁

But atleast learned something new! Didn't know that 'minimum'!

You must be killin' it out here!

Those are some trippy edits at the end there.

Thanks! Love to play around with the camaringo app.

Did you pee on it?

I did not but I do think of it when I'm having sex 🎉

Sounds like a good hike anyway, too bad some trails were closed. That's one big chunk of rock, too bad it wasn't made of gold!

Any time with the kid is good time, that's for sure.

Gold! You are an optimist, aren't you BH 🤣
