When we hear the word habit, we usually think of the bad habits such as smoking or drinking. But things such as reading books, sleeping early at night, going to the gym are habits as well and you can develop them in the same way that people build the habit of smoking or brushing your teeth every morning.
First of all, let's understand what is a habit:
A habit is a 3 step process that includes cue, action, and reward.
Let's take smoking as an example.
Cue- is when your brain is telling you to smoke, the brain starts anticipating the need of nicotine;
Action- When you smoke to satisfy your brain;
Reward- That normally is the mental satisfaction that you get.
Now all habits follow the same path, so why not apply it to reading books?
You create a schedule, and you follow it, for example, every day, at 9 pm you read a book for one hour.
So the action is when you read, and the reward you can decide. You can offer yourself, for example, a bar of chocolate if you finish reading, and like that, your brain gets used to it.
After some time, your brain, at 9 pm will feel the NEED to read.
That's how you build the habit of reading. But remember that the cue and reward is different for everyone.
Note:
A habit normally takes 3 weeks or more to build, so don't expect to become a persistent reader in one day. Give your self time. Be patient because you can do it.
TRUST ME, it is worth it. Books = Knowledge Knowledge = Power
