A monkey in a zoo

A monkey in a zoo is the most depressing sight
An animal that was evolved to just jump from tree to tree
And from rock to rock
Sits silently and stares blankly.
It's not tragic that it's in the cage.
What is heartbreaking is that it is resigned to its fate.
It looks at the onlookers with a look that
Says “I have given up”
It must have struggled a lot in the first few days
Trying to understand why it was there,
Crying and shouting and seething in rage to get out.
Or maybe it was born in a cage.
But this monkey, kind of, forces me to think of our own bondages.
Though our fences are not visible, we are always caught in their snares,
The cages of job, money, success and all the bullshits,
Many times make us look just like it looks today

I took this photo in May and I was struck by the sadness of this monkey's face.
