If your web based blog is there for the sole purpose of broadcasting anything nd everything to the public - I think go for it! I run a very niche blog and have a dedicated area to broadcast it with a strong social media following BUT I feel as though I will be using Steemit for writing whatever is on my mind, when I don't feel like writing to my targeted audience.

Yes, most certainly. Keep your old blog going parallel till Steemit stabilises, just as a backup.
But definitely switch to Steemit. Link your old blog to here. There's no drawbacks, really! This is the future, if all goes well, and you are lucky to be in it before it hits the big time.
