What appears to be large holes or openings in the cloud is an unusual phenomenon called "cloud shelling."
According to the US weather service, the exact cause of the cloud formation is unknown. But it is theoretically caused by decreased air or aircraft incoming clouds and disrupting the cloud cover.
Such compositions occur in clouds consisting of ice crystals and super-cold water droplets, water whose temperature is below freezing but still in liquid form.
Only a few disturbances in the cloud can create a void that gives the appearance of a hole in the cloud.
Two cloud holes seen in southern Wenatchee on February 28 were also seen from satellite images from outer space, according to weather services.
Last October, a huge hole of clouds formed over Moscow, Idaho which instigated the widespread rumors of the rise of UFOs. The British tabloid The Sun reports that "The Mystery of Hello UFOs" has been formed over the city of Idaho.
