Milk has been portrayed, nationwide at least, as the sole source of calcium. Everywhere in the country the media industry heavily advertises that milk is the best way to get strong and healthy bones. The vegan community beg to differ knowing that there is various forms of of calcium, not including dairy, that benefit your body's bones just as well. I'm sure we would all like to know whether milk is the best source of calcium, or not.
Desperation at its peak, the California Milk Processor Board (CMPB) came up with a campaign to boost sales. According to the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), Got Milk? was the ground-breaking advertisement that reached millions of consumers by collaborating with celebrities, brands, and companies. Jeff Goodby, the co-founder of Got Milk?, didn't seem to have any concern about whether milk had an health benefits, he was only concerned about selling more milk since the old "good for you" method was no longer working.
No sane person would ever drink milk from a cow's nipple in order to get calcium. Black eyed peas, fortified orange juice, kale, tofu are some of various sources of calcium that is not milk. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has always been clear that there is no reason to get any vitamins from animals because it not only harms humans, but the animal species as well.
If you were to ask around why milk is good for you most likely everyone would answer with something along the lines of it gives you strong bones. Although, according to a Swedish study on 100,000 people, the consumption of milk increased the risk of bone fractures in women, and increased the rate of death in men. The study was done in 1993, and to be quite honest I didn't bother searching up a current one.
At this point, I've decided to lower my intake on dairy products, and eventually not consuming dairy at all. I'm a little freaked out about the bone fractures, and there's a rumor that dairy causes Osteoporosis too. Don't quote me on that one though.
