I would suppose that artists separate themselves from the collective while they are doing it, so maybe they are ineligible, or less susceptible to the programming.

I would say my favourite artists probably do, and would be less susceptible. As you say though, they then take on the role of the manipulator, and its endless!! haha ... and then theres the question of the manipulators manipulator! ...
